the OTHER Supra Site
Hi Folks,
I have joined Supramania and have been reading their posts. Over there, they act like if you don't have a turbo, you don't really have a Supra. My '89 is NA and seems plenty fast. I've gotten it up to 140 mph on the highway. Plus, the engine compartment is cramped with enough stuff as it is. I've seen turbos and I would hate to work around all that plumbing. I've never driven a turbo. Is there that much of a difference? In 1989 Motor Trend did a "Top Ten Shootout" of the fastest cars for that year, and they got the Turbo Supra up to 146 mph max. I've come pretty close to that in my NA. Is the difference in the lower ratio's? Anyway, I'm very happy with my car and I love these boards so I think I'll stick around here, If you all don't mind. It seems a lot less snooty here at home. Sincerely, Scruffboy |
i hate people like that. i also have a N/A which is pretty fast considering the mods that i've done to it

Question for Supra91
Hey,
I see in your profile you installed a header. Do NA's have a separate downpipe? I installed a Magnaflo Cat with 2 1/2" openings as I was contemplating an exhaust upgrade. Are you happy with the way yours turned out? Is it a really noticable difference? What did you replace the resonator with? I was thinking of using one of those "glass packs" and then the muffler, using 2 1/2 inch piping. Any input you have would be appreciated. Thanks, Scruffboy |
top speed is way different than horsepower
so you juice a supra up to 400 - 500 hp , this doesn't mean that you will gain top speed . it means you will get to the top speed faster . i recently had to put the stock exhaust back onto my supra for emissions testing. While driving it around for a little while like this i decided it's NO FUN . no boost + no exhaust = boring yet very smooth ride .. i'm good to go for 2 years now . i think i only have to pass emissions 2 more times and then the car will be a classic in my state and the testing is over |

how often do they check for emissions? i live in Illinois |

Top speed is determined by horsepower, gearing, and drag. |

Is there a mount for the O2 sensor on your header? I just installed a new sensor to pass emissions here in NJ. They test you every 2 years. I see you live in Conneticut, or as the truckers say, the Communist state. Jersey is pretty much the same. Are you saying that you have to reinstall the stock manifold just to pass inspection, or is it that you can't get your emissions down enough with your set-up? I would definitely not want to reinstall the manifold every 2 years, no f-in way. Anyway, my water pump just crapped out on me and my baby's in the shop right now. After that, I need to replace the valve cover gaskets. So it will be a while before I seriously contemplate the exhaust upgrade. I really appreciate all the input you can give me Supra91, thanks a lot.

Sorry!
Screwed up again, it was ddmcse who lives in CT. I knew someone on this thread was from there. Anyway, if you install the header on an NA, is there a mount for the O2 sensor. Supra91 mentioned something about making adjustments or something to that nature. Now that I think about it, I can't even remember exactly where I installed the sensor. Was it directly on the manifold, or behind it on the block. I did it in the dark with a dull droplight. I think it was the manifold, so a header would have to have mount, wouldn't it.

^ The O2 sensor mounts in the exhaust usually in the header. The moddification needed on an aftermarket header is usually to extend the wires of the oxygen sensor to reach the bung on the header. Aftermarket headers usually have long individual runners for each cylinder and come together further along the header than your stock manifold (which pretty much just comes out and together imediately). That's the only real modification needed to make a decent aftermarket header work w/ your car. Unless your state are real nazi's (i.e. California) I don't see why having an aftermarket header would imediately fail you on an emissions test.
But what do I know...I live in New Mexico (No emission controls) |

anyway...the pacesetter header(i don't know about the obx one) doesnt have the o2 sensor mounting location of the header itself, its on the extension pipe that connects the header to the rest of the exhaust. if you wanted to you could drill a hole into the header and mount it there. the o2 sensor does mount on the stock header |
my point was thAt if you add
30% more horsepower you don't get 30% more top end |

Hey, I see you have a Tiburon for daily driver. I was thinkin of getting one of those myself. I never owned a new car and the price is reasonable and I have heard good reviews. What do you think? I would get the GT 5 speed. The 6 is like another $2000. Give me your input as I would very much be obliged.

Actually its a fun little car for a 4 cyl. I wanted the GT V6 6 speed. But it was too expensive. So I settled for less. It was still expensive tho. It was $10k for a 2001. But it only had 36,000 miles on it. And i also payed for a 4 year bumper to bumper coverage. Carmax was good to me :) The 4 cyl is fun. It vibrates a lot like any 4 cyl would. I test drove the 2006 V6 model. It was a very nice ride. Either way, im sure u wont be disappointed with them.
