85 Supra

I came across a 85 Supra. The car seems to be running fine, but the paint is trash. Any idea if this year was a problematic one? One of those sticker in the window sales. I have not yet inspected the car and the lady owner did not know anything about it other then it was her daily ride.

I do not know if it is a turbo model.

What is the going rate for one of these?

Are parts hard to come by?

mrnickleye 01-14-2006 03:31 AM

So its an mk2. No turbos came in them. They aren't anymore trouble than any other car that old. Parts are available. They aren't worth alot of $$.
You might be able to book it out on kbb.com

Actually it is one of the first MK3s. This was an import from Japan.

I can't seem to find much info on it.

18 looks and only one post. Thanks mrnickleye. Come on folks!

suprra_girl 01-14-2006 12:47 PM

well from stats the mk3 was only produced from 86.5
prior to that was the mk2.. which we suspect you have.. maybe it was a registration screw up?

got a pic?

if it's mk2.. watch the rust in the rear hatch, under the rear quarter windows and in the front bar etc

none of the years were particularly problematic
all 7m mk3's blow a head gasket eventually lol
umm... i would go and inspect it then post back what you saw initially :)

The car is the same shape as yours, but is maroon in colour. The paint is real crap, but the body looks decent. Haven't had a good inspection or drive yet, but I just wanted to get an idea of what the ball park value would be.

Could well be that the owner gave me the wrong rego year/build.

By the way your Supra looks like a real killer! Love the work you have done to it, reminds me of the extend I went to with an X19 over 20 years ago!! Squeezed a 2liter Beta engine into it!

Alfred 01-15-2006 11:31 PM

Hmmm..... really odd. The car is definitely a MK3, but the rego says year of manufacture is 85.

Something fishy here. Could the importer have fudged the documentation to take advantage of something?

Alfred 01-15-2006 11:42 PM

Is there a way to find out the year of manufacture from the chassis number?

j3pz 01-16-2006 01:25 PM

i think if you open the driver door and look by the latch it has a strap with the year of manufacture.

Alfred 01-16-2006 02:26 PM

ok, confirmed that the car is a 86 car. 2.8 non turbo. All seems to be in working order, full options, including cruise. It has the auto box.

Asking is about 3k, is it worth that?

j3pz 01-16-2006 06:33 PM

maybe 3k after a paint job and if the body is ok and engine runs. id ask them to throw in a basic pj and take it for 3k

Alfred 01-16-2006 11:44 PM

What's the cost of a decent paint job? Guess you get what you pay for, but any idea what the ball park figure is?

Strannik 01-17-2006 08:52 AM

alfred if you are in australia you should be asking these sort of questions on
www.supraforums.com.au

prices in us are quite different

Alfred 01-17-2006 11:55 AM

Thanks for the link.

Finally saw the car today. It is 7/86 3 liter non turbo. Looks like alot of work!
