Was there ever just a single turbo supra every built.

Total newb question but, I was wondering if there was ever just a single turbo supra ever made? Because I thought there was only the non turbo edition of the twin turbo edition but I see some supras on the internet net that are single turbo and I wondered if they possibly had to a non turbo to turbo kit installed on them?

Thanks

you must be referring to the MKIV supra's. those were either twin turbo 2JZGTE or N/A 2JZGE. there were single turbo supra's made from 86.5-92, the MKIII supra's. They had the 7MGTE engine. most people who mod their MKIV usually go with a single turbo set-up though, thats what you are seeing i would imagine. they are able to spool up faster with a single turbo setup rather than twin turbo set up.

plus the plumbing for a twin turbo is quite confusing in my mind, lol. it looks like a maze of vacuum, intake, exhaust and wires to me.

How quickly a turbo or twin turbo setup depends on a number of factors. A sequential setup on a twin system will get up and go very quickly... Nonetheless, it is very popular to convert a dual setup for a "Big Single" setup which offers spool that's still quick but also has more room up top and greater efficiency.

There were also the 1JZ-GTE and 1G-GTE MKIIIs which were both twin turbo setups. The 1G-GTE is a rare find (even in Japan which is the only market they were sold in) and not many people know of it or are familiar with the specs. It's a 2.0l inline 6.... kind of an odd bird.

Actually, they spool up the same (assuming parallel aftermarket twins). The reasons for a single turbo are 1) less expensive, and 2) less complex - as you mentioned.

For the Mkiv, the primary factor you have to keep in mind is that the car is more than just an engine. The Mkiv's braking system (calipers, abs), suspension, ignition, transmission, differential, etc., etc., etc. are all much more capable in the TT version than the n/a. Sure, you can slap a turbo on an n/a and make a few more ponies, but you will not end up with a TT. If you want a TT, wait, save up some more $, and get it. It'll be significantly cheaper in the long run to do this than trying to turn an n/a into a full TT.
