A few months ago i bought an 86.5 mk3. The problem is obvious....where's the turbos?! Shortly after i purchased a 1jz auto front clip. What kind of bellhousing will i need to mount the 1jz to the w58(will eventually upgrade to r154)? I have been reading different things all over the net. please help!!

easiest bet is to find a w58 from a mk4 n/a, and get the clutch setup, bell housing, gearbox, etc. bolts straight up as far as i know.

i figured that would be easiest but i was hoping to reuse the transmission that's in the car. i have read that i can use the bellhousing off an na mk4 with my transmission. If that is so, which clutch/flywheel do i use? Would there be any other mods that have to be done? I guess if i can't, it's straght to r154. thanks

nope :) all ya need is the bellhousing off the na mkiv and you should be sweet ;)

thank you suprra_girl, thats what i thought. is their a certian flywheel and clutch i have to use? i would think a 2jz na flywheel would work. what about the clutch and pressure plate? i am assuming the setup in it now would work with the 1jz. if not could someone let me know what will work.

Also, has anyone run this setup without serious troubles? just wanna know what to look out for.

I appreciate all responses thanks! :)

you should be able to use the flywheel off the 2jz and then just go to your local clutch shop and get a clutch kit for a w58... is your 1j already manual?
the only thing i think you need to watch out for is after bout 300hp i believe the gearboxes fail... but if i were you i would get the setup and find out for yourself really... at least then you know for sure how it will respond :)

thanks for the advice. unfortunately no, it's an automatic. i have read the same thing about the w58. but i figure since it's there, i might as well try it before the hassle of trying to find a r154 with the jza70 bellhousing(i hear they are hard to come by). i'll drive it till i break it, then put in something better. wont really know how it's going to hold up till you try right? anyways, any other advice anyone has to offer on this would be helpful.

by the way, im new to this forum and plan on posting alot and reading what everyone has to say.

you will break the box..thats why there was a R154 behind the 1JZ. Apart from that what supra girl said is correct..2j N/A bell housing will bolt up as shall the 2J flywheel and clutch. I dont think they did anything different from what I have seen :) :D Let us know how you go.

CorMSchr 12-10-2004 01:01 AM

I wouldn't mind if i broke the box. i really just want to use till i can come up with a r154 and the parts to bolt it up. i am hoping because i don't plan on upgrades right away(if i can help it  )the it it last a year or so. i plan on documenting the whole process for others to see. it should be fun. :D
