Newbie Question - Just bought 87 Supra Turbo

It has been sitting for 5 years and needs reconditioning

It is an automatic turbo, no T-top, missing the radio.

What's it worth?

Should I keep it stock or do best of breed mechanical upgrades? If I want to sell it, what's it worth and what's the best way? Hate to put it on ebay.....

Initially it is getting motor flush, oil change, coolant flush, trans/rear dif service, brake and power steering flush, gas tank flush, new gas and air filters, new battery and tires, tune-up w new belts and hoses, int and ext detailing

87 Supra Turbo

No pictures yet - it may be a few days

Haven't heard it run - bought it today as a "barn find"

Previous owner says it has typical blown head gasket and ran with "white smoke" :

"The reason for blowing headgaskets was due to Toyota only torquing the headgasket from the factory to 56-58 ft lbs. This torque spec would have been more than adequate for the asbestos HG that was originally intended for the engine. Since Toyota did not switch the torque spec to roughly 72 ft lbs when switching HG material, every 7M that is left untouched is doomed to a fate of a 'BHG', usually between 125,000 miles and 175,000 miles. A correctly torqued OEM HG will last as long as the engine will."

Just offered $1500 from a mechanic who got it running

Any serious money out there?

What would it cost to turn it into a twin-turbo monster?

NJ87SupraT 07-13-2008 08:52 PM

Body is very straight, relatively rust free

A few small dents and needs some trim

$$$$$$ anything supra is expensive. twin turbo monster sounds like you want to do a 1jz swap. can get pretty expensive. without pics its kinda hard to say a price

Will take pics and post on Ebay

Thanks

It would be nice to know a price range based on condition. Why do some Supra's sell for over $80k?

supra_91 07-13-2008 09:01 PM

the ones that sell for that much are MKIV's, mint condition, and have around 1000hp. no MKIII that i have heard of has come even close to that value

NJ87SupraT 07-13-2008 09:08 PM

Mileage correction: 159,000

Thanks for all the interest
