I am still helping my brother look for a car, and we need one that is dependable. I know that a manual is more fun to drive, but wouldn't an automatic last longer? (Especially for someone who doesn't know how to drive a manual.)

I have a 89 N/a automatic and have been romping on the gas since i got here, and even after the abuse i have put the tranny through she still shifts beautifully. I also have an 85 mkII N/A with a manual transmission, and haven't had any problems either, there both dependable, i guess it all comes down to what the driver wants. If he can't drive stick, then an automatic might be the way to go.

It shouldn't take long to learn how to drive a stick. If you destroy a tranny before you learn to drive it then you probably shouldn't drive period :) Get a stick, AT's are for mini vans.

AT's are also very nice in bumper to bumper traffic. :D

There both fun to drive, stick may be a little more fun, you have control over shift points.
