87 supra hood release problem
 

I just got my 87 supra and when i pull the hood release the hood does not "pop". If I have another person pull up on it while i pull the release it will then open like normal. I figure there should be a spring to pop the hood open after i pull the release. I was just wondering where i can get one from and where it goes? pics would be appreciated. Im getting tired of having 2 people to open my hood.:help: Thanks

I've had this problem with other cars. The latch itself is sticking, and includes the spring that 'pops' up the hood. Spray it down with a good penetrating lube, like WD-40 or Liquid wrench. Use a screwdriver to work the latch open and closed, and someone inside the car working the hood latch. Once it is freed up, spray it down with some spray-on lithium grease. That should fix it.

I sprayed it down with wd-40, but im pretty sure there is no spring to pop the hood anywhere. Could someone take a pic of there hood release so I could compare mine to it.

Here is a pic of my '88 hood latch. Then '87 should look similar. I put an arrow to show the spring that should 'pop' up the hood when pulled. It is a heavy-duty spring, so be careful if you try to remove one.

Mine has the spring, but i don't see how that spring pops the hood up. It just releases the hood and does not pop it up. Should the hood struts lift it up a little??

The spring is suppose to pop the latch up, and lift the hood with it just enough to get a hand underneath to open the safety catch. To prove it, next time you have the hood open, gently lower it past the safety catch until the latching loop is resting on the latch. It should be just popped enough to get your hand underneath to get to the safety catch.

The problem is the latch can stick due to lack of grease on the latching plates or damage. The only way I've been able to get it to work freely again was to hose the latch down with a penetrating lube, and work the latch using a friend and a screwdriver. The screwdriver acts as a surrogate latch loop, and the friend pulls on the hood release as a way to easily open and close the latch, and work the penetrating lube in. Once it frees up better, soak it down with a spray-on lithium or graphite lube.

If it has any evidence of damage, your probably better off replacing it. I would not hesitate to use a junkyard replacement.

Ok, I found out the problem the spring is very worn down and does not have enough power to release the hood. So I just need a new one, guess ill check out the junkyard unless anyone knows a site i can get a new one from. Thanks for the help
