Note that there's no such thing as a stock single turbo 97 Supra. '93-'98 (Mkiv) single turbo Supras are all modified Supras. So your question is whether or not you should by a modified Supra?

If the modifications are done properly, a single turbo Mkiv Supra can be as reliable as a stock (TT) Supra, and it'll probably put down more horsepower, but you will probably have to pay more for it.

not only the HP.. but you can see BIG gains with the TT... depends on how much you wanna spend... If you are getting a 97... hold opnto it.. make sure you do all you homework before buying the car.. a compresion check and leak down are almost mandatory for the 2JZ-GTE.. as well as the basic carfax report.. and then a Toyota Dealer inspection is the only way to go... I don't wanna see you be mad about getting screwed...... then after you pay her off.. and have drove one for awhile drive a single.. and then you will know the difference.. then make your plan for your Supra... just own her first and drive it in tt seq then True TT .. and feel and learn how to control the car... then you will be ready for a single maybe even a BIG one...

I have a single turbo (obviously modified from a tt) and I like it better this way. It's just crazy what that turbo does once it charges.... seems liek a rocket to me. just my two cents. Just make sure and do your homework like its stated above

best of lucks

You can see the same big gains with an aftermarket tt kit as you see big gains with an aftermarket single turbo kit. The only other significant difference is that the aftermarket tt kit will cost you more $$$.
