possible power output for tuning a non-turbo supra

this is, without installing a turbo. i can't do that because i legally can't drive turbo cars, until im off my p's at age 20. 18 now, but looking at a non-turbo model. also i can't exceed 200kw's (280hp). i know they are stock about 160, what would get me to 190's? and also, when i'm 20, could i add a turbo and get about 400 / 450hp (300 - 350kw) without buying a new car, and would it be safe, as i know non turbo engines are different from turbo engines? thanx

you could change your cams. larger injectors. different ecu. decat. 2-2-4 branch. could get your power up to close to 200hp.. it depends on how much you are willing to spend

marmlr339 03-27-2008 01:39 AM

close to 200hp? they have OVER 200hp stock. or do you mean 200extra horsepower? im confused. anyway they have about 160kw stock, which is about 220hp, so that woud reduce power? and i can't go turbo until i turn 20, which is a shame. i haver the money required for a MKIV supra, and a few grand for extra's, but i just can't go turbo, or exceed 200kw (about 250hp)

and would it really be necessary to upgrade the cams? don't they last until about 500hp anyway? and the ecu. do you know anything about the cost of that? couple of grand, right?

oops. sorry. close to 200kw. better?

fitting a bigger cam means there is more time for air to get into the combustion chamber. more air=more power. just to see if i have the once sentence right.. only upgrade a ecu when your close to 500hp?? you can change the ecu on a stock car. they can map it in the way you want. performance or fuel consumption. your building a n/a car. so you need to get power from any place you can. n/a cars are more expensive to get to the same power as turbo cars. but they say in the end when you do get there.. it was all worth it.. but i dont know about that. im a turbo person.:gotnos: with a little hint of nos

Honestly, the sky's the limit. Anything you can do with turbocharging (or supercharging), you can also do with nitrous. Note however that large 'shots' of nitrous are a bit trickier to tune for, since both timing and air/fuel have to be adjusted in concert. Note that, just as with na-t turbo kits running a higher amount of boost, you'll need to run a thicker headgasket and/or change your pistons.

to make more power.. yes. different components in the engine do different things. you can have as much power as you want. but if you cant get any air into the engine. what does all the power help you.. changing the cams will help get the air better into the car. see where im going with this?

I have no idea about the 2jz-ge (non-turbo). The us-spec 2jz-gte can make over 700rwhp with the oem cams.

Twin Turbo '95 03-28-2008 03:37 PM

how big is the oem cams? 268?

suprasath 03-29-2008 01:41 AM

hey man just do the smart thing. dont waste money on a n/a. wait 2 years, itll just fly by. your just young and excited. buy and mkiv or get a turbo engine. then you got a nice power plant under the hood

They're closer to 248s (perhaps even as small as 242s), which is still plenty large enough when you're dealing with forced induction and very high cylinder pressures (compared with an n/a engine).

Twin Turbo '95 03-29-2008 08:14 AM

will bigger cams make a difference on a N/A supra.. after you put on a larger down pipe and flow the port ect.

thanx

hey everyone. thanks for your replies. i appreciate all your thoughts and advice. even though i am young, i am 18, been driving for a year, so I'm not bad now. And have been driving a little 2 door lancer for that time. It isn't slow, but certainly not fast. well, it can actually go quite fast, it just takes several minutes to get there. 200km/h is the speedo limit and that was achieved on a raceway after about 2 minutes. and i now want to upgrade my car, but there isn't much point "doing up" a 1.5L 4cyl 1993 lancer. so i was thinking a non-turbo supra. they are available for about 14K over here. non0turbo 100,000Km's on them (60,000 miles). but for now, i think i might just get one, and leave the performance at 160kw, until i can legally drive a turbo. and i dont wanna risk driving a turbo because if your caught with one, you lose license for 3 - 6 months, second offence = impounded car. thanks for all your advice though, just too much money to add performance whilst staying non turbo.

suprasath 04-01-2008 01:35 AM

what year supra are you planing to buy and also whats the reason for all the trouble with the cops if you drive a turbo supra. i have one i got pulled over enuff times.they popped the hood saw everything.let me go.so y would it be a problem for you?

marmlr339 04-01-2008 11:49 AM

a nonturbo supra MkIV is what im looking for. and i live in australia. strict rules. queensland. im under the new p-plate rules, which r pretyy crap.

Twin Turbo '95 04-01-2008 12:31 PM

I'm so glad we dont have that rule here! i wont be able to live without boost!:frown::frown:

marmlr339 04-02-2008 09:57 AM

its only if ur under 20 (on your p's). yea. they are getting so strict with anything involving young people. driving laws. no driving after 11pm with passengers in car, no high powered cars (includes no turbos, no V8's and nothing exceeding 200kw), they r closing night clubs early, "cracking down on teenage been drinking" which apparently includes 18year olds who can legally drink. wtf. the government does it because the majority of australian voters are old, due to a population boom many years ago, but in a few years years time when they DO start to die off (not sounding cruel), the goiernment will be changed :-)
