unknown noise

yesterday i was driving my car home, going down the interstate at about 75-80, when i started hearing a loud knocking noise, i thought first it was a rod knock, but i kept reving the motor and it wasnt going with engine speed, tried pushing the clutch in to see if it had to do with the tranny, but kept doing it. then i was thinking it had something to do with the driveshaft. well, when i was getting off the interstate(around 40mph) it just stopped doing it, so i speeded back up, and no noise. im really concerned about it so i dont want to drive it till i can figure something out, im stumped. any suggestions? :help:

is it more of a knock or a vibration? maybe tires are out of balance?

Tires??????????????????????? :(

Possibly a u-joint in the drive shafts. And very very possibly the center support bearing rubber bushing worn out.

I pulled mine out and dropped it off at the local driveshaft shop. They rebuilt the whole thing, with new bearing, and balanced it, for $300. Might be less where you live, as I'm in Calif.

its more of a knocking noise, like i said, it sounds like a rod knock, but i know its not, it sounds like its around the driveshaft somewhere

I wouldn't go directly to rod knock. I was driving my car down the road a couple of days ago and the car just started making a knocking noise out of nowhere. My inner tie rod end is very worn. I already knew what the problem was but if I didn't know, I could see how one would easily make the rod knock assumption. My point is, to make sure not something else.

Try to move the drive shaft up and down and back and forth by hand. Put the car up on jack stands and shake the wheels to see if they are loose, and pull the spark plug wires one by one and if it the noise stops it's rod knock.

i know for sure it has nothing to do with the engine, i was just comparing the sound of a rod knock to what it was doing, im almost possitive its around the driveshaft somewhere. gonna jack it up tomarrow and see what i can find if anything
