Auto Transmission Shifter Question

I just bought another 88 Supra as a parts car yesterday. It runs but it will not go into gear. It’s an auto and the shifter is all loose and acts like it’s busted. Is there anyway to get the car to go into gear if I take off the shifter? I just want to check the trannny out if I can before I start taking the car apart.

I tried a search by found nothing. I read on here some time ago that the bushing the shifter is mounted with gets worn out, and can be easily replaced.

Well, the darn thing will go into Park and Neutral but no gears at all. The shifter almost feels like it could fall off the car. I want to check the transmission out and see if it was decent before i take the car apart. Is there some linkage that I can manually put it into gear?

Yes there is a linkage on the side that you should be able to see while still in the car IIRC. Check your fuses for any blown ones as it might be causing to not want to shift. But have a friend shift from Park to neutral while you are under the car to find exactly which linkage to move.
