Here's what the timing belt isn't suposed to look like!!

We were getting on the highway and ran it up to about 6k (it's important to merge at freeway speed :) ). I backed off to normal speed and heard a slight pop and suddenly there was no response from the engine. When I tore into it the timing belt had only jumped three teeth on one gear and four on the other so there was no internal damage :offwall:

The belt was still in tack but as you can see it was in terrible shape! Behind the timing cover it was a mess of oily straw.

JEEEEZ man you are going to have to take the entire front of the engine off and clean all of that out before you replace the belt.

I am not sure how you can say nothing is wrong. All of that area is supposed to be clean enough for the virgin mary to eat off of in the event she was to ever decide she wanted to.

It's really no wonder it slipped if was lubed up like that whilst driving.

Supramacist is right I dont know if someone put grease in there and I really dont know why. That is nasty no wonder the timeing belt is all eat up. Like he said it should be clean in there take the cam sprokets off then the back plate and clean it as best you can. :eek2: All that grease and grime isnt good for the belt period just remember when you take all of that stuff off remember where it goes and how it all lines up because it would suck to get it wrong.

When i look at my engine bay and i look at other engine bays i see alot of rust on other poeples engine bays mine has none... Why is this, are the images im seeing from a northern car is that why they are rusted?

He is correct, it should be cleaner than a dinner plate inside the timing belt area. Looks like either one or all 4 seals are leaking bad. 2 cam seals, 1 crank seal and an oil pump drive shaft seal. One or all of those are leaking and causing your problem.

And you better replace the timing belt tensioner and tensioner spring when you replace the timing belt and oil seals. Tensioner is a dealer only item and is $150.

That # sure looks like a Toyota part # to me. They probably buy from Toyota for resale.

List $107.29...wholesale $32.55 (what I paid). You should pay somewhere between.

I don't know if they sell to the public, but many parts stores buy from them. So...you can probably can get the parts local, overnight.

I bought the spring from Toyota. List $9.06...wholesale $7.26

I'd rather buy a Toyota genuine part than a cheap knock-off. Especially an item such as a timing belt tensioner. I don't plan on going back into my timing belt area for a long, long time. I was gonna buy a greddy timing belt and never go back in there ever again but that costed more than the tensioner. And a genuine Toyota timing belt is only 30 bucks!! You really can't beat that.
