head bolts
 

i have an 88 supra turbo, and i want to turn up the boost, so what should i retorque the head bolts to? also how do i hook up a manual boost controller? if sone one could draw up a diagram that would be great. it is basically the kind with 2 barb fittings and a knob on the end. and there is also a T fitting. One more question too. is there a good place to run a boost gauge through the firewall along will something else, or an unused plugged hole matbe?

As for your first question if you havent done a head gasket and ARP studs I wouldnt really turn up the boost much but as that goes the factory 7MGTE turbine will go up some more but not a whole lot. As for the second question MANUEL BOOST CONTROLLERS SUCK imo. The thing I hate about them is they dont automatically comensate for temp changes you have to do it. But as for where to put it it just goes in line with the vaccumm line going to your wastegate on your turbo itself you will see the wastegate it is on the exhaust side looks like a bee hive thing. There will be a vaccumm line going in the top and just put the controller in line there. Lastly for the boost gauge line you could always run it through the side of your engine compartment in the fender and through one of the rubber boots on the harnesses going through there. I ran mine with the engine harness but I drilled a hole in the firewall because I am lazy and didnt want to extend my harness.

here's the thing, my car only has 79,000 miles and the head gasket hasnt gone bad. i bought it from an old man so it hasnt been run hard. that's why i wanted to know what to retorque my head bolts to.

Granted it has 79k on it but the factory head gasket sucks really on a 7M it would be good to just replace it. The thing is you dont know if in its life it was run hot left for a extended period of time with low water and then drove like that. I know the guy might be old but my dad seems like a old man till he gets behind the wheel of my car and hits the rev limiter every shift. But if you dont want to go the route of replacing the head gasket just retorque the head to factory torque. If you check the torque and they are loose may be a bad sign but heh you never know. I wouldnt turn the boost all the way up just at first just a tick and drive to see what happens. If you notice it getting hot at any time back it off. The car may be a 89 but its 18 years old so put that into the equasion.

Being a member of the AARP definitley doesn't always mean that some of these guys aren't young at heart. SO don't let that fool you.


If you are going to go through the trouble to re-torque. You may as well go with ARP and snug that bitch down.

Because the only thing you CAN count on is: She's gonna blow.
It's just a question of when and it's a bit less money to fix it before it happens than it is after. Still the same pita though.
