Boosting a 7MGE or swapping it out.

Ok I am new here and have tried searching for some of my answers but I am not finding what I am looking for. I have an 86 NT 7mGE MK3 supra, and I want to turbo this. I am thinking about going to a gte swap, but know nothing about the things I will need other than an intercooler, plumbing for it, and the wiring harness and ECU for the engine. Will the stock 5 speed trans adapt to the GTE with a new bell housing? I am looking to put down about 600hp with my car and will be going to a stand alone EMS, with a custom exhaust, and nitros. I would like to know if the 7M-GTE is a direct swap into the 7M-GE or if i will need to do anything extensive like engine mounts and so on. I am looking at a JDM enigne from jazz pro parts to swap, so if there is anyone out there that would like to share some knowledge with me, i would really appreciate it.

Go in "search" and type keywords and you will find a lot of posts talking about that I'm pretty sure ;)

If you get a 87 or 88 7mgte it will bolt right in to the orginal motor mounts, The 7mgte is the same block as the 7mge i beileve so the w58 trans from your 7mge should bolt right up if it doesnt you can get the r154 trans bell housing from the 7mgte and then it will bolt up, as for 600hp your looking at some money there is a guy on the form called knate he has a 667hp supra and a 1jz swapped supra he might be able to help your reach your 600hp goal.

thanks

Thanks. I have looked around and found most of the things I will need to make the swap. FMIC, piping, BOV, Wiring harness, bell housing, coil packs, ignitor, new fuel lines (steel braided), turbo manifold, monster turbo, custom 3" exhaust, forged internals, stand alone EMS and the rest of the goodies. Bigger fuel pump and so on. Going to be in the ballpark of 10-15K, But in the end it will be priceless fun. LOL I was just a little unaware of the direct swap and the bellhousing difference between the models.

Ok first off I am not knocking the 7M's at all but I did a 1JZ swap and I love the difference in the car all together. The 1JZ has a factory MHG shares so many things with a 2JZ and is twin turboed to boot. Of course there is a lot more modification but with a little time and pateince it all comes together. But if you dont know much about the swaps then I would go for a 7MGTE swap because you will have so much of a easier time with it. As for all of the parts you will need sometimes if you find a clip you will get everything and not have to peice everything together but 7M clips are really hard to find and cost a little more than just the motor.

I dont know supra's. I know engines, and let me say you can get just as much with one big turbo as you can with 2 smaller turbo's, and not have a bunch of piping to run. As for me running a twin set up, I dont like TT cars personally. To much can go wrong with them when you drag race them, and that will be happening with mine. A 1JZ seems like it will cost alot more than I am wanting to put into this project too. 15K is plenty to drop into the engine, and the JZ swap would be alot more costly. Not to mention it would defeat the purpose of having an american model of the supra since the JZ didnt come in the MK3 in the US. I want to keep it authentic to a certain point.

If you plan on trying for 600HP then you better get the R154 now.
Also if your getting it from jazzproparts they misspelled warranty.

buy a jza70 halfcut and swap everything over.
makes an excellent base for modification

if the 1jz doest do it for ya. go the ma70 turbo halfcut and swap that over.
seeings your left hand drive that may be alot easier for u to do and cheaper

whatever u do tho . dont na-t your car. from what ive read there way to much hassel and are def. not a good option for the sort of power your trying to get.

i did the 1jz conversion ( although my car was a righthand drive 1990 ga70, so that was nice and easy ) and i couldnt be happier. only took me about a week to do all the mechanical side of it too. and it was my first conversion.

do you need an engine?

i can get you an engine. haha.

Knightryder 08-15-2007 09:21 PM

Well I have decided to go with the GTE since it is something available in the US and Im sure if i really put my mind to it, I can find a fresh rebuild that isnt a JDM. Only because I dont want the hassel of doing the harness modifications to run the engine. I found a GT70R ported and polished turbo manifold and turbo that is supposed to pull about 550-600whp. I have done alot of checking into parts and swaps so far and from what I have gathered the 7M-GTE will be alot easier to swap in, and I will be getting the trans to go with it. I think I should be able to go with a short block on the engine since I will be basically rebuilding all the internals and replacing them as well. I really want to stay away from a JZ swap since that engine never came in an american MK3. I want to keep a somewhat stop appearance to the car.

Knightryder 08-16-2007 02:17 AM

one last question though. Will the turbo trans with the turbo engine bolt up to the trans mount? Or will I need to replace the transmount too?

pato 08-16-2007 09:29 AM

iam thinking. your current gearbox is the w58 and the one on the turbo motor is a r134

this was the same as mine. and yes the gearbox mount did line up exactly

Knightryder 08-16-2007 04:45 PM

Im not sure exactly of the trans code # but it is the manual trans for the 86 supra. ALSO does anyone know what the differences are between the vin M and non cars. I have found some minor things so far that have come up such as the pressure line between the clutch master and slave cylinders. I am really new to imports other than DSM, so I really am unaware of alot of the things to expect on this car. I have noticed a few times now that I have had to turn to the vin # to determine if I needed one part or another because of slight differences. Any help here would be great.
