7MGE: Smoke/Mileage/Cold-Start

Hi all,

Have a problem with my n/a:

On a cold-start, the engine will struggle to idle at ~500-600rpm until it warms up a bit and will then idle normally.

Also, on a cold-start, white smoke will come out of the exhaust for 3-4 seconds and then everything will be peachy.

The engine does seem to be burning more oil than it was before and the gas mileage really sucks.

Any suggestions as to what to look into?

Thanks.

I'm thinking the cold start injector is running on the rich side. When is the last time you did a general tune up? Is the car giving any error codes? A tired oxegen sensor can also give you crappy mileage and throw off the air fuel ratio.

Personally, I would start with a compression test to make sure the headgasket isn't leaking.

mine pretty much does the same thing. On cold start it idles rough for a few seconds then evens out (doesnt do it all the time). white smoke will also come out for about 5 seconds

the engine doesnt use any oil and my gas mileage is ok (19-20, it varies once in awhile)

at mid to high rpms it spits and sputters a little bit. i does it more when its cold but it has also done it when its warm. it doesnt do it all the time and it doesnt usually last very long.

i changed the plug wires with NGK's and the plugs were changed a year ago.

what should i do?

Thanks for the info. I'll do a compression test and check the sensors when I get around to it. Unfortunately, another potentially expensive problem just popped up. The timing belt is slipping off =/ heh.

Cold start sensor was my first thought.

so your saying its dumping excess fuel into the engine causing it to spit.

is the cold start sensor just a part of the cold start injector or is it the whole thing.

I meant to say cold start injector.

I'm sorry.
