How do i replace these lights?
 

How do I replace a dome light in my car (there are two, its the one on the right) and then the light in the driver side sun-flap thing? I just am scared to take the plastic covers off.

The dome light housing is safe to pop off and on. Just grab it with your fingers and squeeze from the front and pull down. It's snap fitted. The lenses in the sun visors maybe be old and could snap the plastic clips. I've done it to mine when changing the bulbs...but if your careful you could save it. There's a small slot that you can fit a flathead in to pry it out. Even if the bottom snap clip breaks off you can still put it back fine...it's a tight enough fit that with normal use can stay inside the housing.

What do you mean the housing comes off? Just the plastic cover over the lights or the entire thing?

The whole plastic cover (including the lenses and surrounding housing) comes off. I find they come off real easily if you insert two fingers into the holes on either side of the mirror, then pull toward the windshield and down. It may take a little force... most people have a hell of a time with it, I have no idea why.

I'm having a helluva time with it for sure. I pulled and pressed and yanked and I could not get the bitch off. Any more tips?


I'm more afraid i'm just going to break the thing.

Also, the bulb i took out of the drivers side visor was a 12v5w bulb, but the only bulbs that i could find at the store to match up were 12v10w bulbs. Are these ok to use?

Ok, well then you're in the same boat that most people find themselves in... pull harder. Most people get nervous about breaking the cover right before it pops off into their hand. I guess I've just been lucky.

The visor bulb I wouldn't worry about too much. It's rarely used for more than a minute or two and the temp difference between the two bulbs shoudn't bee too bad. The power consumption is only .42A greater with the 10W. Shouldn't be a problem at all... just brighter.

Cre, thanks for the tip man. I'm goin to work on my car a little tonight and i'll prob. get that taken care of. I'll let you know if it brakes. I didn't brake the visor thing so if i was careful enough with that maybe i'll be careful enough with the dome enclosure

OK so I put the new light in (the 12v10w) and it didn't light up.

Check your fuses. You might want a voltmeter also, maybe.
