Water Pump!!!

My water pump blew its gasket today.

Nice impeller blades....

I am getting really sick of removing stuck on gasket material. I officially work on my car more than I drive it, and I've owned this car for 2 years. Its the perk of owning a 20 year old car I guess. It could be worse, I could have pulled the threads out when I took the bolts out. All of the bolts were loose (kinda like my head bolts were.....) the only things that were hard to take off were the 12mm nuts.

I'm ordering a new pump and gasket from the dealer. Anybody know how much a water pump is from a Toyota dealer? I'm not buying an aftermarket one because the impeller blades are made of cast iron.

Keep the coolant off of your belts.

IHateHacks 05-14-2007 04:22 PM

I'm replacing the ps and waterpump belts anyways. I just hope coolant didn't get inside the lower timing belt cover because when I took the pump off, coolant gushed everywhere (yes I drained the radiator before I took the pump off). So much for my nice new timing belt....

Water pump with a gasket for an 87 turbo supra is $99.99 at the dealer. With my 20% discount I paid a whopping $79 for it. I was thinking more like $150 or $200.

Thank god for 3m scotch brite very fine grit pads, I don't know how I would have gotten the stuck on gasket material off the soft aluminum inner timing belt case. That and gasket remover spray, which says to let it sit for 10 minutes but in reality its gotta sit overnight for it to be of any use. I used the same shit for my intake manifold gaskets when I did my head gasket. God damn black shitty stock toyota gaskets, they used the same gasket material for the intake manifold gaskets, EGR valve gasket, water outlet housing gasket and now the water pump gasket. That shit imbeds itself into aluminum and its such a bitch to get off.

I like to use pb blaster. That stuff is great. I always have a jug of castrol super clean lying around as well.

I don't even buy wd 40 anymore. The pb blaster is all of that and then some.
I keep scotchbrite pads around all of the place as well as assorted fine grit sand papers. Those shitty whatever they are made of seals get sprayed with permatex copper spray. That stuff is the biznomb. lol

You shouldn't have gotten any inside the drive belt housing. But you were there and I wasn't.

I definitley work on mine more than I drive it.

After 5 hours of elbow grease she looks good enough for the install.

I found out that the water pump was replaced by some previous owner, that would explain why the bolts were loose, that and one part of the sealing surface has a nice big gash from probably a screwdriver when the idiot was trying to get the gasket off. Its up near the top most stud so it won't affect the seal but it just amazes me how stupid most people are. To top it off the work was probably done at a dealer because the guy I bought it from hardly knew how to open the hood.

Yeah MK3 supras aren't known for their dependability. Just to put it in perspective, I own a 94 Grand Am, 3.1L V6 with 162K miles on it, daily driven mostly by my mom. This thing has the stock water pump with 162K miles and the last time I changed the coolant the fuckin shit was BLACK, yep Black coolant, fuckin thing runs like a champ and not a single coolant leak, doesn't use coolant and the water pump is mint. Yet heres an 87 supra with 122K miles, coolant was always nice and green even when I bought it, I flushed the coolant about a dozen times and the water pump gasket fails. Good job TOYODA :whateva:

i have one i replaced for the hell of it when i did my bhg # 2 i think it was

that guy with the mitsubishi must really be breaking your stones by now

IHateHacks 05-15-2007 01:25 AM

How do you know about "the guy with the mitsubishi"? Did I brag about him when you were over one day? And yeah, everytime I tell him, "I put a 3" turbo-back exhaust on", or "I just got a blitz SUS intake", or "I'm ordering a fluidyne radiator" or "I'm ordering a walbro fp" or "my water pump just took a shit" he responds with "Why?" or "Sell it". Its really annoying. But when it does run good and I take him for a ride, I can tell, his attitude towards it totally changes because he knows its a force to reckon with, and it will keep up with his car. It won't beat it, but it sure will give him a run for his money.

Now with a new pump hopefully it will run a little cooler. The pump itself is ok but the bearing has a little resistance when spun by hand so I know a new one will free up a HP or 2.

Will update tomarrow if it comes in like they said it would.

IHateHacks 05-15-2007 05:06 PM

Its in, its mint. Now I can only guess what the next part that is going to fail on me. Maybe the oil pump, maybe rod bearings, maybe fuel pump, maybe ignition coils, maybe igniter, maybe CPS, and the list goes on and on.....

I'm addicted to this car. The 2 days I couldn't drive it was like a heroin addict without his methadone. Or a drunk without his cheap liquor, LOL. Now that its back in action I love getting the stares when I'm crusing or doing a WOT run, when that wastegate opens you can HEAR the difference, sounds so pissed.

My power steering pump took a shit right after my water pump.
