I would suggest doing a compression test first off to eliminate the piston rings. Vavle guides suck just because the easiest way to do them is to remove the head and then do them because you have to remove the valve springs. My old 7m was doing the same thing if it sat a while when I was out of town it would throw smoke for like 10 seconds. But on a lighter note valve guides are cheap to buy
 but that doesnt make them easy to get to. Most people when you get ready to do those you are already there might was well rebuild the whole head. That is what they were saying about a tired 7m it may just be ready for a rebuild.
