I am new here, in fact i only signed up to try to get parts. Im borrowing my dads 88 supra and it was a nice car. I dont know how many people on here have had this problem, but its really serious. The resonator on the car (2nd one) got really hot and shattered like glass. The heat from the exhaust was melting the hard plastic under the seat. yesterday while i was driving i smelt something really horrid. i pulled over and lifted the seat off and the heat had burned the padding under the seat and smoldered for awhile. i called for some water and contiuned to monitor it. all of a sudden flames shoot out from under the seat. luckily i saw when the flames went up and yanked the seat out and stomped til the flames stopped. i just thought i would share a close disaster i had with the car.

I think if my seats were spontaniously combusting I would rate it as more than a "close disaster".

That sucks. Atleast you know why it's doing it. What has been done to the seats that you can just up and pull them out??? I had to rip the back seat out of my 91. It put up a real fight. It was mangled when I finished with it.

LOL..., your seats go up like mike jacksons' hair in a pepsi commercial. Really though that's seriously HOTTT.

Have you fixed the problem? Is your car overheating?

bcraig 05-01-2007 04:55 PM

right under the seat, there should be a little black thing that you pull on. its a clip like thing. you have to pull it out pretty far and pull up on the seat. its wasnt a pretty sight seeing flames coming under the seat. i just wanted to warn people who know there exhaust are leaking. they should check to see where the hot air is going. it toasted the brake lines pretty good too.

no its not overheating. the resonator had about a 5 in hole in the top of it. the hot air was heating the bottom of the car, and the seats are right above the resonator. the exhaust air is really hot so once it touched that metal, it heated everything up. yeah needless to say, i didnt have to use the heater much during the winter (just kidding) oh yeah i fixed it. cut the resonator off and flexed piped it until we can put a new exhaust on it lol!

You must buy car parts at Lowes...., do you not. Flex pipe??????

FLAME ON.

That sounds like something I would have done in the past, lol.

I have never used them but I know plenty that have.

Dave @ HPF is the shizzle. He'll hook you up and haggle too.

Just go to a muffler shop and have them cut the resonator out and weld in a piece of pipe (or a glasspack).

If you were at my shop I'd charge you $35 for the pipe job, or $70 for the glasspack install.

supramacist 05-02-2007 04:15 PM

Jeeeeez. That's expensive mrnickleye.

Allthough I am sure you do good work and this is one of those things where you still get what you pay for.

IHateHacks 05-02-2007 04:36 PM

Umm I think bcraig is talking about the cat. The resonator is way back near the diff. The cat is directly under the passenger seat. If your exhaust is getting that hot, you are definately running lean. Cats don't just "shatter like glass" under normal operating conditions.

There is no such thing as a downpipe for a non-turbo car.

Sounds like you got a real toilet car there.
