My '87 Supra 7MGTE, Newbie Questions

Hello, I bought an '87 Supra - 7MGTE (auto) a little more than a year ago.

I've since then had a really nice new 4 coat / 2 clear paint job (original "maroon" with 11 grams of silver metallic) and now that it looks good need to do something with the engine.

Great car for a few months, but then it started acting up ( O/D light flashing, rough shifting, lag like none other, over heating ,,,,,,,, etc...... something to do with the speedo and trip comp not working???)

Well anyway I was wondering if a 2JZ-TT swap (or any newer turbo or twin turbo) is a possibility?
Or am I better off sticking with the original? Either way I want a 5 or 6 speed.

No, I didn't look into that... I was actually planning on doing a complete drivetrain swap (trans and a newer engine)

^ Probably if you see what codes you are getting you might be able to fix your problem even though I see you want to go with a manual trans. If I were you I would get a 5-speed trans and just rebuild your motor.

Also nice sig, I plain to get my supra painted soon as well

Would this work?
I found a reasonable deal on ebay, and I suppose I'd be fine with an auto since it's ... well... originally an auto, and the badass-ity of having this would make up for it...

that would be great but you will have to do some fab work and you will need and diffrent harness for us models and a ecu if it doesnt come with one. plus you will need a lot more stuff

How extensive of fab work would be involved?

I'm pretty set on having this done (2JZ-TT) ... any idea of how fast the final product will be?

i never got into it but thats what i heard (the fab work) its the one of the best engines to come out of japan. all i know is your ganna need a lot of green

The 2jz would be fly but the 1jz tt is more cost effective..

I would rebuild whatever you have already. You'll be better off and have fewer headaches and your'e going to have plenty anyhow.

JDM engines suck the big one and ebay engines do too. If you go that route plan on rebuilding it before install. Definitley with these auto's in particular it just seems better to rebuild what you already have. Then mod it out. Your' first priority is to make it run.

Good luck with that your'e looking at 2 grand atleast if you don't swap drive trains. Another 2 grand if you do.

So think about this and don't take it lightly.

Your paint job is obviously a nice one. Don't make it a waiste of paint by messing up the engine bay.
