power steering?!

So one day my pwr steering went out, i located pump and noticed no belt on it, so i took off all the other belts to get to that belt put it on oblivious to the tension it needed to be at, everything worked great...happened again few months down the line, i then researched it a lil better and found correct tension... everything worked great.... earlier i was looking around in there and saw that the belt is really messed up already, coming apart at the sides.... could this be a crooked pulley or what, basically i was wondering if this happened to anyone else or if they knew some good checks to do, to check that area, any info helps, thanks.

If it's a crooked pulley you will be able to tell when it's running, wabble wabble.

Try the toyota oem replacement belts. Don't skimp on this stuff these cars are a finiky sort.

You have a problem!

Belts that frey on the edges do so because:

1. a pully is bent or loose

2. the pulleys are not all aligned. You may be able to lay a yard stick (cut it to length if need be) across all the pulleys on that belt to check. They should line up.

3. a loose component (P/S pump, alternator, etc) will throw off the alignment.

Note: Toyota is the only place to buy Toyota parts.

And, if everything is set up properly, any aftermarket name brand belt will last for many years/miles. Gates, Goodyear, etc. You don't have to use Toyota, and it won't 'fix' your problem.

thanks, i'll get a straight edge on it as soon as i can to see if it is aligned. and make sure it is tight.... i hope i tightened it enough...

He's more right than I am it would seem. All of your pulleys should be tight and if you can't tell try laying hands on them. Something is out.

Other than that I just went toyota oem for all of my belts because I was also replacing the drive belt and that's my mentality.

There are a number of good belts on the market. I just preferr stock oem.

Why I go Aftermarket

I must clarify this....

I lean towards Aftermarket parts that I know will work well, thru years of experience, and research. I also get them at wholesale thru the shop I run.

I only get a 20% discount thru the dealerships. So, if I can get a part I am confident will be good quality, I always go aftermarket.

ie: P/S belt, and A/C belts cost me about $10ea, and the Alt belt $15. Alt. adjust pulley $25. Toyota will be much higher.

ie: P/S pressure hose (pump to rack) thru Toyota is $324 list, plus $14 for the washers. I got one (by EDELMANN) thru Parts Plus for $156 list, includes the washers. The quality is great, and warrantied for a year.

Some things are only available thru the dealer, then you are stuck getting it from them.

Ya..., I know all about toyota only parts, lol. That's what lead up to the belts.

I had to buy a new fan shroud from them because I couldn't find one anywhere. Not even used so I just made a list of things to get from them while I was there.

Now I just have a small list that get's added to as I go along.
