Wiper fuse short?
 

Alright, so I'm driving home from work today, nice and rainy in Vancouver, and my wipers just stop working. I figured the culprit was the fuse since the washers wouldnt work either. I replaced it, and as soon as I start the car again, fuse blows again. Checked out the wiper motor, looked for loose connections or wires, and couldnt see anything.

Soooo, I have a short somewhere. Im no electrical genius, in fact, I know squat about the electrical system. Ideas where this short could be? and how to fix it? This is the only fuse that keeps blowing, every other fuse is fine.

-wipers suddenly stopped working out of nowhere
-replaced blown fuse, started car, blew again
-checked connections (as much as i know, which is nothing haha)
-only fuse that keeps blowing for some reason

maybe the wrong sized fuse? try putting in a fuse that can handle more power the might fix your problem and be cheaper.. could be as easy as someone just put in the wrong fuse

so a higher amperage fuse might work???
the fuse for the wiper is 20amps
i didnt know that a higher one would work better. i just assumed it would blow again....so maybe a 25 or 30a one??

Oh MY god....

No, do NOT put a higher amperage fuse in. If you do you will melt the circuit and possibly cause a fire. Factory issued wiper fuse is 20 amps for 87-92 supras.

You must find the source of the short. Do you own a multimeter?

a higher amp fuse should'nt catch the car on "fire" or melt the curicet board the wiper with simply not work...

no i dont own a multimeter. but i was going to buy one. where should i check when i use it?

:nono: The fuse is there to keep too much current from going thru the wiring. A safety net. When it hits over the peak amperage the fuse blows thus saving your wiring. If you put in a higher amperage fuse it lets more current go thru the wiring which may cause a fire. Remember the wiring on the car is a very thin gauge wire. It doesn't take that much to heat them up.

hmmmm im totally getting mixed replies here haha...i posted this at supramania as well, to get quicker responses. and some people there tell me to put in a higher fuse. but then here, i hear different. lol

ok.....so i went ahead and tried a higher amp fuse. tried the 25A, and the wipers worked once then it blew haha.
put in a 30A, and they work now. so im guessing the spike is just barely over 25A.
so i have a 30A in there right now. should i keep it in? or is this going to fry or screw up wiring in the future??

So do you want to know how to fix your problem or not? Here in the professional automotive technician trade, we use a tool called a multimeter to solve electrical problems. We don't put higher amperage fuses in, that's what hacks do. And yes, it will cause a fire. I don't care if you believe me or not, it's the truth. You don't have to take my word for it, as you are hell bent on using a 30A fuse in a 20A rated circuit. Some people have to learn the hard way.
