I don't believe there is a syncro for reverse. So...you should always put the clutch in and wait a few seconds before attempting reverse gear.
Does it go right into first gear?? Sometimes, when they wear down, or other problems arise, the clutch disc may stick a little to the flywheel, or pressure plate. That will also cause the problem you describe. Also, perhaps the clutch is not fully dis-engaging when you press the pedal all the way in.
