replacing speedo cable

im about to replace my speedo cable and i need some help. i tried taking one off a car in a junkyard last month and i had no luck. i couldnt get it through the firewall and that car had the valve covers taken off so there was more room than in mine. is there a way of taking it out without removing the covers?

not to poke and prod but why are you replacing your spedo cable? and if you do need to change it do you know which part of the speedo cable you need to change? there is different parts to the speedo cable and if it is just the short one that is really easy to fix just unscrew it but if it is the long piece you will have to dissconect it from the tranny then pull it through the firewall but while inside the cabin under your seering wheel because its just easier that way well it was for me and rememnber to use like a screwdriver to wrench out that blasted rubber part in the firewall hope that helps :dunno:

yeah, i took my dash out to replace the light a while back and either when i was taking it out or putting it back in, i snapped the needle that goes into the back of the dash. so its the long part that goes through the firewall.

its really not that hard replacing it i had to replace my upper and lower speedo cable like 2 times on my third set now. i got so used to it its easier than changing my oil. all i did was removed the gauge cluster, adn then undid the green housing from the white one and then pulled it through the fire wall without removing the valve covers.

did you do it from the inside the car or in the engine compartment?

i pulled it through the engine compartment. it was really easy'
