Random stalling of the engine??

**checking codes as of right now**

Okay, well I drive a turbo 5-speed 87' and I recently (like a week ago) had the head gasket, water pump, spark plugs, sparkplug wires and timing belt changed; and the lady who sold me the car had records of the clutch being replaced about 30,000 miles ago. The only mod I have done is the bosch 110 bov. Otherwise it's bone stock.

Basically i was taking a curve (not a turn) and my car just up and died. Power was on but engine just died. Now before this happened my car was boosting to about 5-6 psi and would accelerate in 2nd and after about 3-4k RPMs the acceleration would level off. It's hard to explain but in 2nd gear its a constant acceleration and force until about 5k rpms but it would level off around 4k'ish rpms. I cant afford anything else!!

What could this problem be? The check engine light flickers on and off, and I have NOT done a diagnostic yet (since the light doesnt stay on). Please help! If you need anymore information to help me diagnose the problem please let me know I am in dire need!!

XtreeX 11-12-2006 05:42 AM

Yep, just did a diagnostic and everything came up normal it just blinked repeatedly... i'm so scared LOL!

Supra2NR 11-12-2006 06:08 AM

seems like your car is chocking
maybe blocked cat?
maybe even broken?
when was the last time u had a tune up

XtreeX 11-12-2006 12:39 PM

Broken catalytic converter could cause my car to die in the middle of driving?

In terms of tune up, i just had the head gasket and a whole bunch of other junk replaced and oil change and all that.

Could it be bad spark plug wires and some of the pistons are misfiring? Also, I get it up to 5psi so my turbo is okay right?

When you jump the terminals to recieve codes ,the check engine light will flash every 0.25 seconds to indicate all systems normal. You had a pretty decent part of the engine apart and it's not impossible it was put back together slightly off.Does the car idle and respond as it did before the work?I would be inclined to suspect the timing or fuel delivery ,but I've been wrong before.Let us know any more symptoms that pop up ,and good luck.

thats the word i was looking for "timing"
that could be it, or combination of all of the mentioned above

my friends car is jus like that, after he drives it hard for about 5-10 mins
it dies in the middle of the road, but that was his turbo's fault it was jus too small for that car
i doubt that the problems with urs

XtreeX 11-12-2006 04:47 PM

Well, I was actually wondering if a bad turbo could be the cause? I've never owned a turbo before so I wouldn't really know for sure, on the contrary it does boost up to 5-6 psi still... so maybe it's not that?

I'll be taking it back to the mechanics tommorow (monday) and have him look at the timing and the fuel. For the most part the dying of the engine is somewhat graceful lol, in other words it doesnt stall hard it just turns off... If the lights on the gauge didn't come on and the power steering shut off no one would ever know that it actually stopped running (stock exhaust -_-)

Anything else I should let him know to look at aside from fuel and timing? Thanks guys!

----edit---- Could it be the O2 sensors?? and in response to the post above the car DOES idle normally

This morning i was looking at my engine bay and noticed that the hose from the BOV was actually off a little bit... its the hose taht connects the Bosch BOV to the 3000 pipe. The side that was off was teh side connecting TO the BOV. if that makes sense... Could this actually be the culprit? Regardless, I'm getting smaller clamps to make it a tighter fit. I don't know how i missed it last night...

Supra2NR 11-12-2006 08:02 PM

cuz maybe it was dark last night?

that maybe it you had a leak
the air that was supposed to be let-off by the bov was still in the system causing the car to choke and stall

XtreeX 11-13-2006 06:36 AM

well it was still stalling... how can i tell if the BOV is working properly?

Supra2NR 11-13-2006 06:03 PM

i dunt know about that

you can borrow a bov from another supra see if still stalls
im jus gonna get my car this saturday and more learning for me

or u know what
what about this
how far is rockford from chicago?
cuz most likely i will be cruising all sunday cuz im gonna get my car saturday
u can borrow the bov on my car, see if the stalling still happens or what not
unless there's chances that bov can get messed up too

XtreeX 11-13-2006 08:42 PM

Rockford is north of chicago and can take 90 all the way down/up and its about an hr and fifteen... Depending on traffic.

I appreciate the offer, its really generous, but I dont think that will be nessecary. I bought new clamps and hoses for the Bosch bov and made them extremely tight. So far, in the short 3 minute commutes i make to school and back, it has been ok. We'll see how long this lasts. I'm also going to replace my O2 sensors. I know with my old supra (90' auto non-turbo) it would die in idle until I got my O2 sensors changed, that seemed to help alot.

I'm gunna drive it for another week and see what happens. It would deffinetly be nice to meet up with another supra owner though, maybe once the weather gets nicer we could meet up in the Chi or somethin.

Guys one thing real quick... I noticed that my car doesnt make it to 60 mph in 2nd gear. I thought that if I was accelerating hard a stock supra could make it to 60 mph before redlining it... If this is the case could it be a bad spark plug/wire? The plugs I got for the car were like $50 from O'Rileys since I didn't have time to wait for toyota wires (it IS my daily driver after all). So could it be miss firing? Like only 5 pistons working?

Any ideas? I keep posting because I feel like you guys know more than the mechanics around town here. TIA

Supra2NR 11-14-2006 04:26 AM

that might b why she aint spittin right
jus check it real quick b4 the problems gets worse

but , yea as soon as the weather gets nice
thats why im tryin to set-up the directory of owners here
we all can set-up a meet
soon enough tho
our cars are not meant to be on snow lol

XtreeX 11-15-2006 03:38 AM

So should stock 7mgte be able to reach 60 MPH in 2nd gear without redlining it? Anyone?

And this all really started aafter I installed the Bosch BOV mod... how can I tell if the Bosch BOV is really working properly or not?

Supra2NR 11-15-2006 05:36 AM

actually, i dont think u should even try

i know this might sound newbish
but manual says 2nd gear should only be at speeds 40-45 mph
(thats the best i can remember)

but either ways check ur plugs
my bet is, its number 6 plug

XtreeX 11-15-2006 06:32 AM

I just put the stock Bypass valve back on and the car ran 100%.

And in terms of the fastest 0-60 times dont you have to stay in 2nd gear til around 5000-5500 rpms? Regardless of what manual says...?

I have the Bosch 103 BOV and this has to be the problem with the stalling... Is there anyway to check to make sure it works? Any tricks?

Yes, Bosch sucks, throw it out or sell it to some kid with a Honda. Get yourself a real BOV. Like an HKS or a GReddy. Personally, I love the sound of a Tial BOV.

XtreeX 11-15-2006 07:10 AM

Yea I dunno it just seemed like a nice little inexpensive mod to do. Regardless if it sucks or not, it must be broken to be making my engine stall right? This way I can get my money back... If its broken versus sucking.

dcrusupra 11-15-2006 07:14 AM

Well, Bosch is usually meant to be recirculated. When you say stall, does the cars engine completely shut off, or the power just dies out?

XtreeX 11-15-2006 06:14 PM

No the engine actually cuts off. The power steering goes and everything. I literally have to restart the car. The power (radio, headlights, etc.) stays on. It's odd. Either way, I bought it off ebay and I'm relatively new to the whole car scene and it seemed like a nice, budget mod to start out with. The only other thing I've done myself is shimming the wastegate and other external bolt-ons.

I'm hoping the problem is the Bosch though, I just had $1400 invested into this thing and that included headgasket, water pump, timing belt, and so on... So another problem would be a problem lol :D
