You should be able to pull it off. Just get a breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt and have your son turn the crank over slowly while you are fighting with the pan. I know that i have done it both ways, and it is easier i think to just pull the motor. That way if the motor needs anything else, you can do that at the same time. Anyways, hope this helps.
