Question Which is the better buy?

I am buying my first supra this week. One is a 86.5 n/a white mk3, with 80,000 miles and its a 5 speed with all the option and the burgandy leather interior. The car has no rust only minor spots(easily fixable). The other is an 89 turbo with 135,000 miles new HG, Timing belt, running 10 psi, with Tokico shocks, H&R springs, Boost & AF gauge 2 12 Exhaust and MBC, Runs strong. Its white with blue cloth interior. This car has rust in 3 spots... On both doors by the side trim right when the door ends( towards the mirror side of the door), and by the trim in the rear wheel well. My question is which one should I get?? They are both piced at $2000... Please give me your honest opinions. This car is gonna be a daily driver, keep that in mind. And the Turbo is a 5 speed also.

Heres the link to the Turbo one.

I'd say turbo because it's more fun. Post pics when you get it.

P.S. - I merged the 3 threads to one here.

if the turbo is indeed in great condition, get the turbo (though it will require more maintenence). but, $2000 sounds a little too cheap so i would anticipate it needing some work. i dont know how much they sell for in IL, but a turbo in decent shape around here (so cal) sells for about $4k-$6k. an 89 auto turbo with 120k miles sold here in san diego for $7k a couple months ago. then again, it is so cal.

Aside from fun factor, You guys are forgetting to ask him a few questions. First, What are you doing with this car? Driving it every day, restoring it, driving it sometimes, putting it in a garage, etc. If your going to get a daily driver, Def go with the n/a. Less miles wil mean less parts to buy, asde from just the headgasket. 2nd, The n/a is much easier to work on. The electronics and mechanical aspect are much simpler. If you want a project car or something to mod the crap out of, go for the turbo. You will spend a lot more on it, But it will be much faster in the end. 3rd - The n/a will get much better gas mileage and wont use up oil, spark plugs, etc as much, And turbos need premium fuel. Something else you want to consider if you are going to be driving a lot. I have owned both an 88 turbo auto, And a black n/a 5 speed. The n/a was by far easier to work on, And more reliable. It had 200k miles on it with a leaking HG and it still ran beautiful. Cold starts, Hot starts, Long miles, It did it all. My turbo, Has a crapped out CPS, Bad coil pack, Blown its HG, and has a few boost leaks that i cant track down, And it only has 82k miles on it. It also has a transmission leak (auto), But this is unrelated to it being a turbo. I believe it is just the transmission cooler lines. So in summary, Turbo for a project car/fast car, And n/a for reliability, gas mileage, And ease of use.

I paid $1700 cash for my 87' Turbo 5-speed (non-turbo) and it still needed a head gasket. I replaced the timing belt and water pump while I was down there. After taxes for the repair I paid around $1400, with labor. So I see it as $3100 for the car. It has a few rust spots, but not through the metal yet and still on the surface. Interior is absolutely MINT condition. Engine bay is relatively clean, only problem now would be the exterior.

I would say $2000 for a turbo is a LITTLE on the low side, especially if the head gasket was just replaced. Deffinetly check into it further...

I also use this car as a daily driver. If driven responsibly I believe any car can handle being driven everyday. If you burnout at every stop and drift around corners (lol, i do sometimes) then obvisouly the reliability factor will go down. But lets be serious, who buys turbo (other than TDIs) and doesn't want to go fast?? LOL!

Default Just drove the supra..

I just got back from the test drive. The car boosted to 10 psi flawlessly, engine pulled hard. Car is pretty low the ground. Good tread on tires(comes with a set of winter tires). The interior impressed me the most. The interior is close to mint. Drove the car for about 10 min and let it idle for about 20. No smoke out the exhaust even under WOT. Shifter bushings might need replacing soon. A/F gauge needs to be hooked up. And its a targa! The downside of the whole car is the rust. I am hoping to buy the car on tuesday. I am willing to pay around $800 for body repairs. After the body is fixed I think that it will be an awsome ride. I am planning on doing divorced downpipe and a Super sequential blowoff valve. Since its mostly a daily I am not looking for to much speed. I plan on replacing the Head gasket with an aftermarket head gasket later this summer. Hopefully he will sell me his car I really like it and will enjoy it very much.
