Shimming the Wastegate

i was browsing along sogi

when i saw this
does it actually work

putting sum 4-5 washers in between the wastegate and the turbo

does it actually giv u more boost/hp
how far can you go
will the stock injectors be enough to handle the extra boost?
will the turbo handle this extra boostin
kinda unorthodox to me, but can sumone break this thing down real quick

ddmcse 09-11-2006 08:19 PM

yes it works

it's a very poor man's boost controller

Supra2NR 09-12-2006 01:51 AM

have you done it too?
and how long has it been since you done it?
how many washers did you use?
any side-effects in the long run?
and how much more can u put there?

sogi says the 5 washers raises the boost to 10 lbs
to put more you need longer screws
can i jus put more to get more boost?
how much more is still safe?

ddmcse 09-13-2006 10:36 AM

no i did not use this method i bought a cheap manual boost controller . it was fun for a while before i switch to an electronic boost controller .

understanding how the turbo and current (stock) boost controller work will help you understand how and why this washer method will work

i think a manual boost controller is much easier to install than the washers

Supra2NR 09-13-2006 04:24 PM

i jus wanna get a headstart on a project

i wanna know as much as i can with the turbos
im gon get mine within a month or so

so, dont mind the questions, im still kinda lost when it comes to the turbo
but i think it'll be better if i have a car to look at lol

Isphius 09-13-2006 04:50 PM

Its the same thing as using a manual boost controller. The boost controller would be a lot safer and easier tho, So just buy one for 20$ when you get a turbo. Shimming the wastegate just makes the wastegate open later (ie, higher boost). The fuel system can handle it fine. My turbo with some boost leakage will make 9 psi with the wastegate totally unplugged, and it handles it fine. The fuel system will be fine untill you hit fuel cut(11-12+, dependant on ambient conditions), and the stock ct26 can take about 12 or 13 psi. After than you need a lex afm, 550 cc injectors, and an safc-II or something to control the fuel. And then you will need to upgrade the compressor wheel. But to get to that in the first place you need a new turbo back exhaust, intake, IC pipes, etc. And a good FMIC never hurts either.

Reeves 09-13-2006 09:16 PM

So you don't have to worry about fuel untill after 12-13 psi? What about the octane? Whats the psi limit on 91 octane?

A manual boost controller will allow me to go from stock psi and up right, as opposed to like 10 psi and up? Just curious because I want to get a manual boost controller but don't want to go above 8 psi untill I get a new boost gauge.

Isphius 09-14-2006 02:19 AM

Always use the best gas you can find. 93 or 94. Or more if its available. The car is safe on its own, It will fuel cut before you can break it, or well overload the injectors. Thats why its there. But i wouldnt trust a stock HG. ARP studs and a new toyota hg(nothing else will do besides metal) at about 100 ft lbs will run 93 octane and boost to fuel cut just fine. And yes, A manual boost controller will go up from your factory setting, so your good there. I would say get the gauge first.

Reeves 09-14-2006 10:22 AM

I already have a hks 2.0 mm bead metal headgasket with ARP studs, so im good there. And I already ordered the manual boost controller.. Ill just be real carefull untill I get a gauge. Worst that can happen is ill hit fuel cut off, right? Oh and 91 octane is all that is available. Is there any way to get higher octane?

Also how do I go about tuning my car so that it doesnt run too lean or too rich? Am I going to have to worry about that or will my cars ECU take car of that on it's own? Im gonna get a air/fuel mixture gauge when I get my boost gauge to make sure I don't get the lean condition, but if it were to run lean how would I change that?? Bigger injectors and lexus AFM?

Isphius 09-14-2006 02:43 PM

Get an apexi safc-II. It lets you change your fuel curves based on rpm. And the 91 octane shouod be ok for like 10 or 11 psi, But dont push it too hard. The lex afm/550s will help some with fuel cut, But there main purpose is so you can add more fuel. Eventually what you need is the lex afm, injectors, a greddy FCD, and an safc-II. But then you might as wel start modding everything else, etc. Its a neverending money pit lol.

Reeves 09-14-2006 08:20 PM

Im not worried about fuel cut since I don't plan on going any more than 11 or 12 psi for quite a long while, if ever. Don't push what too hard? The psi or the engine? And what is an FCD?

Im going to stop at 11-12 psi, full exhaust, intake, electric fan, and upper IC pipe + BoV. Of course ill do the safc thing and maybe FCD (once I figure out what it is =D) and alot of other minor things. Don't really want to go with bigger injectors and lexus AFM for awhile though. I should be okay, right? Once im done with those mods im going to be working on my suspension as currently my car sways like a boat.

thats what i really wanted to know
i jus dont wanna run way too lean and have the same result the second time

but i'll probly stick to boostin at about 11 psi then so it'll be safe

Isphius 09-15-2006 03:35 AM

youll hit fuel cut at 11 psi on hot days.

Doesn't it depend on each individual car? Like doesnt it vary from supra to supra a tiny bit?

Isphius 09-15-2006 05:24 PM

Yes, it varies by car, temperature, humidity, how hot the car is, how dirty your intercooler is, etc. But at 11 psi, if its pretty warm (>80) pretty good chance that youll hit fuel cut.

Spudboy 09-15-2006 05:31 PM

Reeves...I'm going the other way. Did the suspension first, will go for more power next so I'll trade ideas and experience.

I just installed TEIN Flex coilovers. Had the car on track after TEIN last week. HUGE improvement in body roll and handling. These TEIN are very adjustable so you can really dial in your set-up. (I will be putting on proper rubber before next track day, probably Toyo RA1's but open to suggestions)

If you get the TEIN let me know before you install and I'll share a few tips.

Also...while I was on track my car got very very hot after about 6 to 8 hot laps. (it was about 95 out) I have a recent new head gasket so I don't expect leaks there. Any suggestions anyone?

ok then , jus 10 psi during the summertime

what about the wintertime, when its 20 degrees outside?

Isphius 09-16-2006 08:28 AM

i would still say keep it under 11 till you get some elctronics upgrades. FCD, lex/550s, etc. whatever you want!

this car looks really good!

i think your car heating up is normal in the hot 95d weather.

Isphius 09-16-2006 10:25 PM

I agree lol. Its getting hot cause your running laps in the hot desert lol. The car does look nice too. I give you props for that!

supra90turbo 09-18-2006 03:13 AM

All cars are different. Fuel cut occurs at different points, at different times.

I had a religious fuel cut at 15psi exactly.
I tuned my ProfecB specII to hold a rock solid 14.7psi and it never hit fuel cut.

Isphius 09-18-2006 04:24 AM

Oh thats pretty good then. Ive head most are around 11-12 thou, although i guess some could be higher.

Supra2NR 09-18-2006 08:19 AM

well
he's from MA
your from NJ
im from chicago
cold states in here

kinda make the bitter cold of the winter time seem a lot better

Isphius 09-18-2006 11:35 AM

Haha yeah it gets pretty dam cold here. I deleted your post cause it was a double so no hard feelings haha. How is chicago?

no problems, its sumtimes my computer f's up thats what happens
so it'll a favor to me and everybody if u deleted it lol

but maaaan, it jus the middle of september and the wind chill is about 40- 50 degrees already

the winter could be so much better, without the damn wind
it could be 35d's outside
but thanx to the windchill, it can feel like 10 degrees outside

well, thats what i get for living in the windy city, so no one to blame here lol

but only pple in chicago can do this
and you will only hear and see this in chicago

in the middle of the winter time, when the regular temp is about 20 - 35 degrees
if it warms up to 45 degrees , that already warm enough for chicago pple
you will see pple walking outside with a t-shirt in the middle of winter

but in the summer, when the temp is about 90 degrees,
if it cools down to 60, pple feel like theyre gonna die from the cold
and the coats come out in the middle of summer

i guess pple jus get use to the weather too quickly here lol

supra90turbo 09-19-2006 12:40 PM

Mine was regardless of weather.
100* out and 70% humidity, 14.7psi
40* out and 0% humidity, 14.7psi

MA gets a large variety of weather ranging from extreme heat and humidity to extreme cold.

Supra2NR 09-20-2006 12:15 AM

but back to the questions

what happens when you hit fuel cut?
and whats the worst that can happen if you hit fuel cut?

and what's the highest boost that the engine can take?
whats the highest boost that pple have had in the 7mgte engine?
