Some Helpful Advices 1990

Im new to supra let alone tuning up cars...

Does anyone want to give me advice and tips? Teach me some stuff?

I have a 1990 Non turbo supra by the way

Well here's what I plan on doing to my N/A... Lightweight flywheel, new clutchplates, lightweight underdrive pulley, replace driveline, check for lighter wheels, aftermarket dry air filter <heard on this board I think that the oil ones can mess up your AFM>, possibly new cam gears but not sure, less restrictive exhaust with high flow cats to keep it legal, possibly new exhaust manifold - saw a few on EBAY for the N/A's, short throw shift kit.

If I missed anything or said anything wrong lemme know guys.

OR... if you have lots of money... swap a 2jz or 7MGTE into it. Then you'll have ALOT more options to play with.

how much will that cost?

I saw one guy was doing them a few years ago for 6k. Swapped your 7M for a 2JZ, took one of the turbo's off and replaced the other with a larger one to fit in the engine compartment. I don't know if this counted transmission or not. My guess is it'll be more than that though to find a 2JZ and someone to do the work now. You'd need something like a Tremac 6 speed I believe to handle it.

Would cost way too much and too much hassle to put in a 2jz, you would have to fit it.... However another option is the 1jzgte engine. Would cost about 2500 plus install. the only downside is the ECU will have to be relocated (don't know how) or solder longer wires together since it is a japanese engine and is right hand drive. It's a twin turbo 280hp engine. I personally like the 7m engine, but thats because I want to build it from the ground up.

I would stay away from a lightweight under drive pulley unless your crank has been balanced for it. Without a dampener on it you will destroy your bearings and fry your engine.

I would say to hop up a NA, engine wise, first exhaust and intake. I would favor a 2.5" ID cat back, test pipe or high flow cat, and some custom headers. You can buy headers but I have yet to see one that is tuned for the firing order in a Supra. As for intake, you can get a dry filter, and do a little fabbing with some tubing to clean up the flow path to the intake.

If you plan to dig into the engine, you can do a port and polish and put some more aggressive cams in, get your rotating assembly balanced and blueprinted.

Then no matter what you do, even if its nothing you can get a MAFT Pro, it will allow you to tune your engine, so you can do almost anything and then tune the MAFT Pro to run your engine correctly.

Other than engine upgrades, I would suggest the common, light weight fly wheel, upgraded clutch, one piece drive shaft, and the changing of all the fluids in everything.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Damn I may as well retire. Chambers is everywhere I'm trying to be.

Hey Shiftysupra you dont have to relocate the ECU man do some research there is a lot of people like me that just did the tuck method and the ECU is in the stock location without extending the harness. Now that I got that out of the way 2500 plus install sounds kind of cheap considering all of the changes that have to be made and the fact that it is better to get a clip. Not so much for the 90 supra but just a good idea then you get all of the other stuff that the motor tranny ecu and harness do give you like the stock intercooler, piping, and so on. I would say if you have a NA and want to work it over it is cheaper to upgrade to a 7MGTE than go the 1JZ route unless you just have a want for the 1JZ. Don't think I am talking you out of it because I love mine but just have to be ready for all of the headache in putting it in and if you arent a really good mechanic then you would be best off not going that way at all. Also the 1JZ is a lot more reliable IMO than the 7M just because of the work you got to put into it to make it faster. If you dont believe me then ask Arron at driftmotion he will tell you the same thing they love the 1JZ over the 7M.

my apologies... I have come a long way instead of the "post because you can" days....:boring: haha, just bought my 7mgte... and yes i was wrong the only thing needed was to lengthen the harness not relocate ecu.
