Successful 7M-GTE swap into NA Supra

Has anyone in here swapped a 7M-GTE into a NA body successfully? I would like to get in contact with anyone that has and ask some questions.

gomezmk 07-27-2006 07:43 PM

I did a jdm swap 7mgte into a na body on my 87 supra. There's a good site on doing a swap at mkiiitech.com.

Dejvid1785 07-28-2006 04:29 AM

I know about that site i just thought it would be better if i could hear from someone that has actually done it themselves. What was the hardest part? If you don't mind kinda recap what all you had to do.

I am actually in the middle of doing the swap. I just took both engines out, and put the gte in the n/a car. Now its all about hooking all the things back up. What’s your question, ill try to answer it.

the hardest part of the whole swap was find all the sensors need to complete the swap such as a air flow meter, hac sensor, ecu, wiring harness, ignitor and intercooler piping which is cheapest to custom make, other than that, it was pretty much simple. I bought most of my stuff on ebay but you just have to take the time to wait for the best price. Also for the oil cooler, I just bought a b and m tranny cooler from summit.

How did the re-wiring go to make the tach work? What else was really hard? Did you have to use the turbo drive-shaft? Will the NA LSD be alright cuz apparently there is a difference.

gomezmk 07-31-2006 03:29 AM

to make the tach work, you have to pull out the cluster and take out the tach gauge, behind the tach is a small little box with resistors on them. On mkiiitech they explain which resistors have to be cut out and the ohm value to replace them with, I soldered my on. And for the driveshaft, I stuck with the na 5-speed so I left the drive terrain alone and so far it's worked fine. My na came with lsd when i got it.

one question

how much did all this run you?

gomezmk 07-31-2006 04:49 AM

including a jdm engine it was about 2,500 dollars.

Supra2NR 07-31-2006 06:08 AM

not bad,

how much was the engine itself,
and when you got the engine, what else did you get
what else should i ask to come with the engine

all i can think of right now is the intercooler , and the ecu
u said u used the same tranny right?
what did you have to do to make it work
did you customize anything to make it fit ?

and how long did it take to get it done?

So you stuck with the w-58? Mine also came with a LSD luckily but i wanna run somwhere around 400 horses and i know that tranny will not like that.

gomezmk 08-01-2006 01:27 AM

I f you plan on running 400hp you have to go with the r-154 tranny. The engine cost me 1,000 dollars. when i got my engine it came with a cut wiring harness, turbo, accordian hose, fan and intake manifold including the throttle body. jdm throttle body's are different in that no linkage is involved, instead your cable goes straight on the throttle body but you got to make some kind of bracket to hold the cable. Also very very important, when you get the jdm engine, change out the oil pressure sensor. Japan does not read psi, it's something else. I left my on and when I turned the key on engine off, my oil gauge rose up all the way up and then it came down. what it did was it broke my oil gauge. And for the na tranny w-58, no mod was made, the 7mgte will perfectlly mate the na tranny problem free. The length of time it took me to do the swap was about 3 month because I bought most of my stuff on ebay.

Supra2NR 08-01-2006 08:24 AM

thank you for clearing that up
cuz im hurting with money already right now
knowing that i dont need to buy another tranny
gives me sum sort of relief

what about the ecu, did you get another one from a turbo?, and the afm?
what do those ones from a lexus looks like?
is it the same one found in turbo 7m's

CzA 08-01-2006 11:50 PM

To remove the intercooler, do I have to take off the front bumper, and is there anythign else i have to take off to get at it?

Thnaks.

I believe you have to use the turbo ecu, i am not sure if thelexus one will work.

Supra2NR 08-02-2006 01:53 AM

one more

any good resources,
im looking to buy a 7mgte engine around 600
the guy that i was suppose to buy the engine from got arrested
so i have no acces to him
he was a drag racer/ drug dealer type of person

and how much will be r134 tranny anyways?

tone loc 08-02-2006 03:22 AM

I have been lookin around and its hard to find the r-154 trans but i found a couple and the least was like $350 (it was in bad shape) and the most was like $600.

Dejvid1785 08-02-2006 05:03 AM

I think the easiest way is to buy a donor car, you have everything you need.

suprra_girl 08-02-2006 06:05 AM

donor car

or

ecu
wiring harness
usdm throttle body
egr (if you have emissions in your state)
usdm oil pressure sender
turbo tacho, plug n play (look on ebay, for sale sections etc)
to make it easier get a wiring harness for your year (i.e. (86-88) yellow plug to yellow plug, or (89-89) (90-92) grey plug to grey plug) will be straight plug in then
ignitor
coils
pressure sensor
afm (7mgte)
use your box or auto trans
use your driveline

can't think of anything else :)
