7MGE - Stuck with changing Head Gasket???

Hey everyone,
I just bought an '87 MK III Supra and I'm trying to take off my engine head to change the Head Gasket.
I already took off the intake plenum, exhaust manifold, unscrewed the 14 headbolts, and the head is loose, but something is still holding it on pretty tight. I'm pretty certain it is being held on by this water fitting at the back (hot water to heater lines?) Does anyone know what size socket I need and how deep it'll have to be to clear the hose attachment? And do I have to take off the middle cover above the sparkplugs to get it off?

Heres a pic of the fitting:

I'd appreciate any help I can get (this is the 1st engine I've worked on)

Thanks
-Pascal

Hi,

You don't need to remove the heater return fitting at the rear of the head. Must be something else not removed or not undone. Have you removed the thermostat housing at the front?

I had a lot of problems with that heater return fitting at the back seized solid. If you do remove it when the heads off and need to replace it remember to order all thee parts from Toyota.

The correct name for that hose connection is Water BY-Pass Pipe. The socket size is 32mm (six flats), I made the mistake in ordering just one part number from Toyota without realising there are 3 parts to order. I refitted my head and waited for the remaining parts to arrive, I had a problem gaining access to tighten the nut up due to the bulkhead in the way. I resolved the problem by grinding down the 32mm socket but even then it was a tight squeeze.

Part numbers 90401-22004 Bolt Union 1 off,

90405-17005 Water By-Pass Pipe 1 off,

90430-22008 Gaskets 2 off,

These are old part numbers but Toyota should be able to identify them.

Hope this helps Bill UK

the fuel pressure line under the intake will hold the head on and it goes through the intake and is held on at the back of the fuel rail

make sure all wiring plugs have been unplugged, all fuel lines, and the water hoses at the back are removed from the main water pipe which goes under the exhaust manifold

can't think of anything in particular that may be holding... stick you hand all around the intake & exhaust side and just feel around

at what area is it holding down?

We havent disconnected all the wiering completly, but the fuel rail is already off, and the top half of the intake and also everyting on the fron + exhaust sides. And I cant really tell what area its holding down casue the studs that hold it in place (dowls??) stop you from angeling it.

Any other ideas? WE'll go have another look now .

Yeh, awesome. Thanks a lot for your help! I finally got the head off and changed the head gasket. Now I'm putting everything back together. I put the head, time belt, intake and exhaust manifold back on. I think I might get stuck with putting back the wiring though. I'll post a question if I need to.

Thanks again
