JDM Automatic Transmission Problem-Please help!

Hi, I am replacing my original 88 Supra automatic transmission with a JDM replacement for the same year(s) 86-92. The shop that is doing the swap for me called today and said that the speedometer connection is on the wrong side of the rear of the transmission and that the connection cable/wire is not long enough to reach. Has anyone else had this problem and a solution? Can you just cut the speedometer cable wire and splice it to make it longer? Or can you remove the rear housing peice of the transmission and swap it with the original to have the correct speedometer connection? If so, do you have to swap the speedometer gears too? Here are pictures of what I am talking about. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Looks like you could swap the tail housings. Otherwise, you'll have to have a longer cable made.

just out of curiosity, is it possible to drive the car without the speedometer cable connected? I know the speedometer won't work then, but will the car shift correctly? Who do you talk to about getting a longer cable made?
