carrier bearing

I can't find anybody who has a driveshaft carrier bearing for a mkiii. All the autopart stores keep getting a bearing for a mkii setup.

My local Carquest store can get the right one over night. Try them.

any idea what these cost? I think I want to replace mine as well

mrnickleye 07-07-2006 12:45 AM

I'll get back to you

I can find out tomorow. In fact, Im gonna email to my house the shop account # amd password so I can go onto our Carquest acct from home. Then when someone needs to know availability and price I'll have it right here.

yay. Can you check a front wheel bearing and seal for me too?

gomezmk 07-07-2006 05:03 AM

I called car quest in my area and they said the part is discontinued.

mrnickleye 07-08-2006 04:32 AM

I forgot to get the web address from work, so have to wait till Monday on those parts prices.

I haven't looked up a carrier bearing, since mine was new when I got the car. My Carquest store is a 'really great one', and not because I used to work there either. They will put a lot of effort into trying to find your parts through other sources.

They have been in business for 30 years, and are what we call, a 'real' parts store. You don't hear 'sorry, we don't have that'. You hear 'I don't stock it, but let me see what I can do to get you one'. 'I'll call you back in a few minutes', and they usually get it that day.

Somebody has an after market bearing. There are too many of these cars on the road to not make that part.

Is there a driveline specialty shop in your area?? they have access to 'everything' related to drivelines. Usually in stock, and not overly priced.

In fact, I just remembered that last year I pulled a driveline out of a '87 supra and dropped it off to the local driveline shop and had all the joints and center support bearing changed, and the line balanced, for about $150.

Well I got the Carquest site up now. They don't list a center support bearing. But try a driveline shop. Also the parts store can call other sources for you.

1989 car....
Front wheel bearing = List $-vs-my cost $ = $98.49/$40.85
Seal = $17.53/$7.61

You should ALWAYS get your parts below list price. I seldom even charge list price to my customers.

Somewhere around the middle would be normal.

hmm...can you get me 2 of those if i give you money? i cant find them cheaper than 70$...which is a bit high for me. But i dont want to sell the car with a shot wheel bearing, and i want to change both of them if i do anything, cause im like that. lol.

Isphius 07-09-2006 04:09 PM

I also wanted to know if you/they can find a rear upper ball joint (the one on the hub), cause mine is worn and loose. not cool for handling

I bought a carrier bearing, but it was for the MK11 or similar, none for the MK111. Just the rubber part seems to wear out mostly so I just took my old one apart along with the new one and swapped the pieces. Still not the perfect solution, but it helped. It is too bad that one of the most worn out parts on the car is that part and no one makes a replacement for it. Unless of course you are willing to buy a one piece shaft for 2 or 3 hundred and do away with the carrier bearing for good.Russ

Isphius 07-09-2006 08:43 PM

thats what i would do /\ lol. Mine seems to be fine @ 190k miles, although i do get a little bit of transmission vibration (through the shifter) sometimes. Maybe its starting to go.

I found a dealership that has the carrier bearing but he asked what the bearing is held on by. he said theres two different kinds.
