Car running rich

hey i have got an 87 n/a sura 5 speed. the problem i have is when i first start the car the engine light comes on. ill drive it for a while and than the light shuts off. when the engine lights shuts off the car runs like sh*t. you can smell gas really bad and my eyes start to water. also the car just seems to bog down and not want to go and than itll finally go. even at sto light i have to rev it up and than drop it into first just so it doesnt die. and if it does die i have to wait to start it. i think its getting flooded. anyone have any idea what it might be. i tried changing the oxygen sensor on the motor didnt help. (also bought a new fuel pressure regulator for it as i was told the 7mge and 7mgte have the same FPR).

Air Flow Meter

If you have any black smoke from the exhaust then the AFM is probably the culprit. Get one out of a junkyard for around 25 dollars and it should fix it, there is also a chance your airfilter is clogged too but AFM seems more likely.
Try to find one that hasn't had the cover pryed off yet.
Its possible the circuit board inside has been delaminated and the copper circuit board runners have peeled up.

Check the engine codes too. It should tell you exactly whats acting up.
The only thing Ive seen cause the light to go on then off without resetting the fuse would be the coolant sensor plug on top of the thermostat housing.

yea the only code i get is code 22. i tried to fix it i checked the plug and cleaned it and it still doesnt work. the sensor that has a single wire i actually broke it off. could that be it?? yea there is some black smoke that comes out when i first start it. also my oil gauge seems to work only when it wants to. any way to fix it? you know where the plug or sensor for it is? thanks again

Get a volt/ohm meter and check the resistance accross the coolant temp sensor. It should be between 200-400 ohms after engine is warmed up. If it reads OK then you will probably have to meter the wires from the plug to the ECU.
If the oil guage is broke its probably the guage. Ive been driving without mine for about 3 years now, dealer here can't get it even from Japan.
Single wire sender is for the temp guage if its down the right side below the thermostat housing. Its only for the guage.

what is codes 22 description?

:dunno:

Code 22

Coolant temperature sensor signal

the temp sensor could be at fault.... if its grounded or faulty there is a possibility the PCM is receiving a false coolant temp reading . this reading is very important for fuel delivery, in such case the sensor is really bad it tells the PCM there's a -30 degrees of coolant temp, in that case the pcm will flood the cylinders or run extremely rich.....

My car was doing that same thing a week ago it was my ecu connector it was broken. Its goin to be electrical. Check your wiring.

Did you do it the easy way first and make sure you dont have a massive vaccum leak?
