I am thinking that the rubber stoppers have worn out and the hatch is now sitting too low and the latch is now loose and rattling. Possibly the rubber seal around the hatch is worn too, but you can adjust the latch and have it pull the hatch down tighter if you need to.

You are not gonna be able to adjust the hatch. You can still get those rubber stops, and those stops on each "side". All should be in contact with the hatch when it is closed.
That hatch weighs a ton, and jiggles alot on the road. I have had some success, for the last 3 years, with a tiny dab of vaseline smeared on all those stops. Mine's starting to rattle a little now, so I'm going out right now and add a little. OK, I'm back. I'll let you know in a couple of days if it's still working. Also, I was thinking that if it still rattles, I'll try adding a couple of layers of tape on the hatch at the places the stops rub. This will take up any clearance, and may help.
