Is wd-40 safe to use to clean my car parts ?

What should i tighten the head bolts to i have them at 50 like my aynes book says but with all the head gasket shiot that these cars have what would be the best torque ?

wd-40 is safe. my friend cleaned his engine with that but got it on his belts. it wasnt good. keep away from the belts and things if you clean your engine.

Well WD40 isn't really a cleaner but it will clean some stuff. It isn't really a good lubricant either, but it will do that a bit too. WD40 is best used for wetting the cylinder walls when installing pistons. Use a brake cleaner if you are trying to get some really gooey stuff off and it won't leave a residue or a good parts washer is a nice thing to have.

Most of the people on here are torqueing the stock head bolts to around 72 to 75 lbs, but again it depends on what you are using for a lube on the threads. My ARP studs call for 80 if using their lube but they say 130 if you use a 30 wt oil. That makes no sense to me so I will use their lube. I can't imagine 30wt oil being that slick to require that much torque, but that is what they say.

I usually go up to about 40 lbs first then up by 15lbs each time then a final check to the correct torque.

Yep ^^^ 72 lb ft of torque is the general consenses, using motor oil on the threads of factory bolts. $40 from Toyota. Since you already have them at 50, go on up to 72 in 15 lb steps.

WD40 was developed for use in the 'space program'. (hey, 11 years there, I got some retirement coming, when I get old and crotchety, hee hee).

It is a metal protectant to keep moisture off. It works pretty good as a rust penetrant, and very light oil applications. It displaces water, but leaves residue (film).

Simply Green, full strength, works pretty good to de-grease under hood. Spray it on, let it sit for 20 min., then wash it off with 'Brake Clean'.

I used ARP head studs and torqued the head down to 80lbs. Its been almost 5,000 miles since i did it. Do i need to re torque the head even with the arp setup?

not from personal experience but on another forum a member mentioned that by not retorquing his studs he was experience leaks under high boost

it wouldn't hurt i imagine, just crack em one at a time and retorque em up :)
