wont stay started

hey just got my car out of storage on tuesday (87 n/a 5 speed) she ran and drove fine untill about saturday night. saturay night she would start but than would die shortly after unless i held my foot on the gas. than today i went to work and even with the pedal to the floor she wouldnt do anything for a few seconds than shed finally slowly rev. had to leave my car at work today didnt want to get stranded. me and our maintence guy wen through all the vacuum hoses and everything seems to be ok unplugged plug wires one at a time but everytime he unplugged one it made no difference which worries me too. Plus i did the diagnostics and code 22 flashed (temp sensor??) any one experience any of these problems or might know what it could be thanks.

Coolant temp sensor

Your ECU is telling the truth. My 87 N/A car had the same problem, poor running, code 22. I reseated the plug on the coolant temp sensor (two pin plug on thermostat housing next to the timing belt cover) and it worked for awhile. My ECU harness is basically brittle from running in a desert environment for over 10 years so I had to splice in two new wires and the problem was solved. The temp sensor is probably OK, it should read between 200-400 ohms when its warmed up.

even with the code 22 my temp gauge still works. plus when i start it the engine light comes on and it runs fine. after about 10 min it shuts off than runs like crap

it could be ur MAF....same thing happened to his car....is intake kinda...fell apart after the MAF and it wouldnt let the motor run...easy check...

cousin said it might be my oxygen sensor. get a new one on thursday. how do you test/check your maf?

temp guage

The temp gauge sender is a different sensor located on the right side down a few inches and is a single terminal.

replaced oxygen sensor no difference but now i can small gas really bad drove around the block and couldnt stand the gas smell any more. Any clue as to what it could be fuel pressure regulator maybe? injectors?
any sugestions would be aprrecited

charcoal cannister?

Check all your connections to the charcoal cannister. Its supposed to burn the vapors that evaporate from the gas tank. If a hose came off then it could be the fumes from the tank venting in the atmosphere and entering the inside of the car. That is if there aren't any visible fuel leaks anywhere.

87supraguy 05-06-2006 08:45 PM

canister hoses all conected. no fuel leaks anywhere went through that last year when i bought it and found out that the gas tank had a hole in it so i went through all the fuel lines and they all looked good. any other ideas?

87supraguy 05-06-2006 11:59 PM

today i pulled all my plugs out to check them (did tune up last march) and now there is oil all over them. Could i have a bhg? could the oil on the plugs cause these problems? im starting to get frustrated with it please help if you can

Oil where?

Oil on the outside is caused by the valve covers not tightened down enough I get that all the time. Its more prevelent towards the back of the engine than the front. Scince you have the throttle body off when changing the plugs its a good idea to check the valve covers. If the plugs are oil fouled on the inside where they fire than the rings could be weak or valve seals could be leaking. Beefing up the ignition to a multiple spark type might help burn the oil better but it won't cure an ailing engine.
The problem with the Toyota head design is the spark plugs are right in the middle and anything that gets trapped up there be it water oil or sand it stays there.

more than likely your valve covers are leaking and when you pulled the plugs the oil just went down them
try cleaning them up and restarting the car
when you say the car doesn't rev well... does it surge when you try to gas it?
does the car smoke out the exhaust?
the temp sensor it is complaining about would be the ecu temp which is a green two pin plug on the side of the thermostat housing, check out the wires & plug and make sure they are fine

let us know how you go from there :)

the reving issue is that when i first start it it runs and idles fine. after it warms up for 5 to 10 minutes it rev up and down up to 3000 rpms about three four times than if its in nuetral(5 speed) itll just shutter ffor a few seconds and than dies. when you got to start it again it wont. itll turn over just not start. if you wait 10 to 20 minutes she'll start again and do it all over again. i changed the O2 sensor that did nothing. could it be my fuel pressure regulator or injectors?? if any ideas let me know.
thanks

Ive got the leaking oil thing too, I Think the pcv thing is leaking thou, cause its really oily sometimes. As for the odd rev, have you checked for major vaccum leaks, like the intake hoses coming off or something? Also look under the hood, And see if that vaccum thing that is next to the idle screw isnt doing it. BTW, what does that thing do? (the thing with the filter) I plugged mine into a vaccum line, And now when i left off the gas it doesnt annoyingly stay revved for a second. But it didnt really seem to change anything else.

I'm having the same problems with my crx. I think it may be the fuel pump on the crx but am stumped. I think the person who can figure out your problem can also shed some light on my problem as well.If you figure out what is going on let me know:)

87supraguy 05-09-2006 02:57 AM

is there any way to test the fuel pressure regulator???? I just removed it thinking that might be the problem but want to know if you can test it before i spend a $100 on a new one

justin1642 05-09-2006 01:42 PM

i once blew the valve cover gasket and that caused the car to run like crap only on 3 or 4 cylinders. there was oil all over the spark plugs and it filled the holes up like an ice tray i just cleaned the oil out with a vaccum and replaced the plugs and gasket and then it ran fine.
