Bolt Identification
 

I am in the midst of a dreadful BHG fix on a 1990 Turbo. I took a lot of photos, but they were nowhere near enough. Also put all the removed bolts and nuts in labeled sandwich bags.

So after I get the "intake manifold" bolted back on the head, I find all the bolts in the photo left over--from the bag "Intake manifold to head".

I have another bag of bolts for the "outer" manifold-or whatever it's called, so these in photo aren't for that.

Any ideas on what they're for? The longest is 32mm from under the head to end (8 mm bolt), and the shorter fat one is 10 mm dia. The other photo is the horrible jungle of stuff I mhave to sort out.

I don't want to go any further with the reassembly until I find out what they are.

you'll find it gets much easier after the first time

I use several 'disposable' aluminum muffin ($0.50 ea)trays from walmart to keep the bolts and nuts seperated whenever I do big jobs.

Close, but the wrong side. The fat bolt is to hold the support/stay to the intake manifold/plenum/whatever it's called. The backs of my hands are now cut up trying to get all the intake-side bolts in. Thanks a lot, Toyota.

Not sure how much the EPC will help you out, but it has been an awesome help to me many times.

I am not so sure you want to hear advice from me at this time, but I usually wrap masking tape around nuts and bolts and then mark the tape stating what they are for.
It does take time to do that, but saves time in the long run.

The 3rd bolt from the left was for the EGR thing that bolts to the rear of the plenum--has 2 bolts into the plenum and has a 90 deg curved tube that gets screwed onto a fat male thread-like a speedometer-cable connection.

The long bolts were for the lower hidden bolts-intake-to-head. Some fun getting these back in. Trick seems to be to use a small bit of heavy paper in the socket to hold the bolt head fairly tight. Then you try for a while to get the stupid bolt started in a hole you can't see.

Anyway, I managed to get the manifold and plenum back on last night-about 11 PM. Threw away that dumb little metal piece that joins 2 pieces of small rubber tubing for some gadget way under the plenum. I'll just use a single piece of tubing.

Tonight I'll hook up some of the many wires and hoses and start working on the alternator mount/front left lift-hook thing.

Still waiting for my welding/brazing expert friend to fix the turbo oil lines I cut off. Yes, I gave up tryiong to get the bolts out and took 3" thin cut-off blade to them. A few seconds and the turbo came right off. I had planned on using some welded/brazed fittings on them to make future repairs easier, but there aren't going to be any for me after this!
