The cable on my '89 automatic goes into the rear of tranny on passenger side. It's hard to get to because of the mounts/frame etc.
I believe there is a split at the firewall 1/2 way down. The speed sensor (check light problem) is in the speedo head. Hopefully its the cable bad. Otherwise I think you have to replace the speedometer to get the sensor.
