turboing n/a supra risks?!
 

This is my girlfriends cousins name who has a 89 supra n/a and wants to turbo it
(i know nothing about toyota i am a subaru guy)

So in his case would it be better to turbo or to swap...better=to easier cheaper

In my subaru 2.5 rs if i were to turbo we could only run 7 psi 10 psi would be pushing the limits now i know that this is a v6 so maybe it could take more boost and be a stronger engine but i am not sure... this summer he will be bringing it down and me and him will be taking on some tough tasks to his car... he will have 4 to 5 thousand dollars to spend.. would it just be better to do basic mods exhuast intake pullies groundingmods or is it worth the hassle of turboing...

It would be best to buy a turbo motor and swap it in along with the ecu. The turbo motor has lower compression, bigger injectors and oil squirters for the rods. The higher compression in the NA motor will limit you on boost. Turbo cars also got a much stronger tranny (R154), but the w58 will do fine til 350-400whp, then bye bye.

-Turbo motor, ecu and harness can me had for 1500ish. Make sure you retorque the head (Search for "Head Gasket")
-intercooler and piping
-aftermarket downpipe w/ high flow elbow
-good time to do an auto to manual swap if you are auto.

Then with the left over money
-high flow cat or test pipe
-3" min mandrel bent cat back
-K&N filtercharger or equivalent (not ebay)
-Boost gauge that'll read at least 15psi
-Manual or Electronic boost controller.

This will put you in that price range with some left. You'll only be able to boost to 11-12 psi before the ecu cuts fuel. There are ways around it, but you don't need that info just yet.

Alright thanks man basically same with my N/A subaru engine but we can run about 7 psi and 10 psi pushing or cars limits but if we enhanced to better pistons and cams and and oil pump we could be pushing around 15 psi and be faster then sti's being lighter then the sti's but im going to be swapping like what you said for this guy to do....



So where is a good place to find a motor?! are you talking the TT one or the single turbo one (don't know the codes for the engines sorry)

7m-gte is the the turbo motor that came stock in 87-92 supras
7m-ge is the non turbo 86.5-92

1jz was a twin turbo 2.5 liter only released in japan and australia. (available for import. many do the swap.)

You can search online vendors, ebay, or local engine importers. There are plenty of em out there.
