TIMING procedure

can anyone tell me the correct timing procedure for an 88 na? with the distributor retarded all the way it will run with a bit of help from the throttle. at full throttle it doesnt rev for about 7-10 seconds then it starts to gain rpm. as soon as u let off the gas it falls strait on its ass. the crank is at zero, cams lined up with the marks within half a tooth(is that acceptable?). ive tried for 2 days to get everything to line up perfect with no progress. any help would be greatly appereciated.

electronic timing is set to 10 degrees advanced, if you can only get the timing light to go to 5 or 15 degrees that means you are 180 degrees out

You might have to pull the distributor and move it a tooth. What you can do is take the retaining bolt out of the distributor, have someone start it for you so you can keep it from coming out and turn the distributor until you can get the right timing, I think you need to put a jumper somewhere first in order to set the timing though. If you were 180 out, the car would backfire and act like it wants to start but wouldn't.

Let us know how it goes.

Actually I was 180 out after the head gasket job I did, it will run fine, it's just the coils on top will run 2 to the 6 plugs rather than the three. when I adjusted my timing to the right setting I actually lost a little bit of power, sence i was no longer at 15 degrees. The dealership said they have seen it before

What the hell are you talking about???
WE are talking about a N/A car with a distributor. ONE coil.

If the distributor is installed 180* out, the car will NOT run (unless you erroneously put the spark plug wires into the wrong places in the distributor cap to compensate for the error of 180* out).

Well I had this same problem after replacing my HG. It's an 86.5 N/A. The distributor was put in one tooth off and it did this. Reset it one tooth to the right and wallah, problem fixed.

ok didnt realize you were talking about N/A, but you dont have to be an ass hole about it. If you dont think that can be than maybe you should call wheeler toyota grants pass O.R. and learn somthing. ask about an 87 turbo that was 180 out.
