blocked off EGR

when you block off the egr what does it do? If someone could explain the whole thing it would help. thanx

I read somewhere that while the egr helps emissions, it also lowers the temp of the last two cylinders (because they get shafted by the cooling system in a straight-6), and the egr valve closes at WOT anyways. (i just read this somewhere, so i can't guarantee accuracy)
