Too loud?

I installed a new muffler, and an 18" resonator.. it's still too loud. I did the pipings in 2.5 inch diameter... but it sounds so "deep", that it gives me headaches after a while... I actually smile when I stop accelerating.

What could be causing this? The damned muffler? Or what???

It depends on the muffler. Is it one of those like the Honda boys use to make their car 'seem' powerful. They are straight thru, and don't actually muffle the sound.
I use a 17" Magnaflow that is straight thru. It was so load, I put a 24" long x 4' round glasspack in the middle as a resonator. now mine sounds perfect. A 3 chamber, but no packing, muffler would quiet it up, but still sound tough.

Hrm...

I know nothing about mufflers, but you asked if it's "straight through", well, I can tell you this much: When I held it in my hands, the inlet pipe was 2.5 inches, and I didn't see it getting any smaller than that all the way out... so the "minimun" diameter was that, in the whole muffler. Does that mean it's "straight through" ?

Would one with "restrictions" still allow the 2.5 exhaust to work? I mean, how is it restricted? Smaller diameter, or same diameter but with "stuff" in there to kinda lower the sound of it? I need info because I'm a total newbie when it comes to this. What a waste of money man, that muffler costed 70 bux =(

And...

Yeah, it's probably the ones the Honda boys use it to make their cars "sound" powerful. I miss the sound of the inline6... I can't even listen to music well anymore, lol. I just picked that muffler because it looked nice.... =/

Straight thru means...you can see right thru from one hole, out the other.

Check out this site for info.

Yeah..

Mine's straight through then. Would getting another one reduce the loudness then? I read that link you pasted, nice.

How do I know a muffler is not straight through? If I can't see the other end of it?

A straight through muffler has a straight exhaust path from inlet to outlet, obviously you can see straight though it. http://images.honda-tech.com/set1/smile/emsmilep.gif

Ok.

Then yes, the path from inlet to outlet is straight, nothing in between. I mean, it appears there are things on the sides of it... but from inlet to outlet you can see right through it and there's nothing there. Is this what makes it louder? I need to change it desperately.

my suggestion for when you buy another muffler is to not go by looks (would you do that with a car? no, the only exception is women!) see what other people say and what the company say and for gods sake go with a name brand

lifesnotfair 12-26-2005 12:06 PM

Heh.

Heh, "for god's sake go with a name brand"... LOL.

Well, luckily it wasn't too expensive, and maybe I could sell it or something. Gonna try to change it this week, because driving the car is giving me headaches.
