Hi to all of you Supra people here.
I've been driving my current car, the Mazda 626 2.0gti almost for a year now, and even though it's a nice ride, I've been starting to look for a different one. And when i recently visited a local car dealer, there was this nice dark blue Toyota just crying for me to buy it :) It was a -87 3.0 non-turbo with an automatic gearbox, 235000 km's, but looking very well taken care of. I didn't have enough money then to even think about buying it, but he's had it there for a long time (7 years! :D), so I might be able to get it reasonably cheap.
What do you guys think, are those 3.0 automatics fast enough for a Supra? :) Of course I'd really like to have the one with the turbo, (and manual, naturally), but all of them look the same anyway.
So does anyone know how fast they go from 0 to 100km/h (or from 0 -> 60mph, it's almost the same)? Does the 3.0 auto reach 8 seconds, and how about other engines/gearboxes? 1/4 mile doesn't mean anything to me, I have no idea how fast it actually is (here in Finland we only have that 0->100km/h as a measure of acceleration).
And last, but not least, what about fuel consumption? Gasoline is VERY expensive here, ~1.15euros(us dollars) per liter. My Mazda gulps about 8-9 liters/100km, and as a guess I'd say a 3.0 non-turbo manual Supra might be around 13-15 liters?
Oh yeah, and in winter on icy and/or snowy roads, automatic might not be the right choice ;)

If any of you knows anything at all about those things, I thank you in advance.

hi and welcome to the board :)

if you can get it really really cheap then i would go for it... but if you're really looking for turbo power i would get one with a 7mgte in it rather than 7mge
most ppl that get the 7mge's eventually do the gte swap anyhow so maybe you could get the 7mge and save ur ass off in the meantime for the gte hehe

some supra owners swear by n/a power, i believe they come out 200hp @ the engine & 185ft lb of torque and probly do 0-100kms in bout 8 secs.. not too sure really on the n/a...
and also don't be fooled... auto's are actually faster on the dragstrip than manual :P

i think the 7mge auto uses bout as you say.. 13-15 or so
hmmm i think in icy snowy roads auto's are ok, just don't plant your foot right in it lol

anyone else?

supra girl dont fool yourself autos can be quicker than a manual on a drag strip but it depends on the driver of the manual......why do you think drivers like Mark M..........wateva his last name is drives a manual coz its quicker if you can bring it to its full potential but autos are really good and are quicker for amature drivers like ourselves........so yeh go for it it sounds good enough m8

suprra_girl 09-17-2004 07:19 AM

hmmm we could argue this point forever till we're both blue in the face.....

but if you do your research on drag racing you will find that the reason ppl have manuals is usually they just like manual or they don't want the shame of the general viewpoint of ppl saying... oh its auto
autos are far superior on the strip and most big drag racers are looking to upgrading to an auto for that point... it is not amatuerish at all

generally ppl just want manuals so they can do doughies bla bla bla

but i'm blue now and not gonna argue no more :P hehe

you are sooooo wrong you could not be more wrong.......well actually you are pretty much right but I really didnt want to admit that but still the top 10 times ever recorded on a drag strip (street legal times) are all done in manual cars........these are all highly funded and sposored drivers and cars so if you want to debate the fact they dont have the money to make the change to auto i highly doubt it there must be a reason why these people drive the manual right???? hahaha you wanna debate this i am more than willing to show you how much I can go with this stuff ohhhhh damm right

Kohkelxon 09-19-2004 06:53 AM

Hey both of you, stop! :) Let's just agree to disagree, ok ?-)

And about that original topic... I think you're right Suzie, eventually I would just want more power from my car and would want to do an engine swap or buy a Turbo, and as I really am no mechanic, the only choice would be to get another Supra. And since you both have such strong views about those transmissions and their capabilities, I guess I'd be just fine with either an auto or manual. And there's always the chance to tune up the engine a bit if it doesn't match my expectations =) So I'm gonna wait to earn enough and buy a mgte... hopefully I'll be a turbo driver before summer 2005 :)

How much is that 185ft lb in Nm? And what's N/A mean?

hehe we're all good... ;)

glad on the decision you made... i think it's a good one and yea manual and auto both have their advantages and it seems R154's are fairly popular in the states so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one if you do buy an auto :)

good luck with it :D

mk3 supras all the wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy B)

Kohkelxon 09-19-2004 01:18 PM

Hmm...R154's?

btw. Just gotta correct this one fact here, I ain't from the USA, I'm from Scandinavia, Finland(Suomi).
You know, in between Russia and Sweden, the people who build Volvo's and Saab's :)

I have a 86.5 Non-turbo for sale. It needs an engine, and I was just going to part it out. The exterior is white and the interior is grey leather. It has an auto trans. The interior is in pretty good shape. It was a Colorado car, so it doesn't have any rust, which is something that plagues cars out east. The exterior needs to be buffed out, and I have sold the rear end for it. But, I am willing to sell it for cheap. E-mail me at mccartney@cybermesa.com if you are interested.
I also have a 1991 Turbo with a manual transmission. It is in cherry condition. It has 100k miles on it. 17" wheels, performance and suspension upgrades, all the options, targa top. I am not willing to part with it for cheap though. It has no rust on the car and is a custom paint job with black and a cherry pearl coat, so it looks black, except in the sun, when you can see the cherry in it. The interior is dark maroon cloth. But, I am putting a new engine in it right now at the Toyota dealership in my city. E-mail me if you are interested on that one too. I would be happy to send pics if needed.
