trims??

Im just wondering, can anybody tell me about turbos and there trims? Also on another note just genreal info on turbos (stock, non stock, upgrade) that will work for our cars (7mgte) I looked up info in the forums but I just want to learn more

joel w 11-13-2005 07:21 AM

turbos..

here are some of the lingo definitions. http://www.turboneticsinc.com/glossary.htm

and some good all round turbo info...
http://www.turboneticsinc.com/faq.htm#turbosizing

dont believe what she says, size does matter..

very intersting. helps me alot. Turbos are different to me. Always have had v-8's "american power" the supra is FUN i love it

trim by the way...
i think trim is just the size of the intake wheel diameter? mine was upgraded to 50 trim and the housing was machined to fit the larger wheel..and nothing was done to the exhaust side. i guess the exhaust side mods are not needed untill higher boost levels. 50 trim is good to about 400 hp or 15psi (the sweet spot of the turbo) where it runs most efficiently....bigger hp motors need more air and or lager wheel to flow more air..

1988gte 11-15-2005 05:41 AM

is 400 to the ground or flywheel?

joel w 11-15-2005 05:51 AM

probably flywheel.. but not sure..

1988gte 11-15-2005 06:27 AM

but sill thats lots o power. isnt 15% a general rule in drivetrain loss? still around 340 or so to ground is alot! my mach put 281 stock. with 15% should have been 255-260ish. I think i read in a car magizine 15% was a "general rule" anybody seen or heard of this?

joel w 11-15-2005 06:51 AM

15% that sure sounds about right if i was gonna guess

also 50 trim will make 20 psi but i think that at that boost level its working it too hard and starts to create heat and? not to mention you need octane boost for higher boost and more fuel...,, just tell em what you have now as far as mods, and what boost you want to run.. and what your future plans are as far as hp and more mods... hahahha. they will help you deicide whats best for your application...

Thanks a bunch

1988gte 11-16-2005 08:53 PM

so are we 50 trim in factory form?

joel w 11-16-2005 09:00 PM

no, 50 trim is upgrade from stock to flow 17% more air. not sure of the stock trim size. but PT told me that the ct-26 was undersized even at 6.8 lbs from the factory....

dcrusupra 11-16-2005 09:09 PM

Whats the max boost on 50 trim and how much is it to get it to 50 trim?

joel w 11-16-2005 09:22 PM

i was told by PT it can boost up to 25 lbs, but it wont last long hahha and its way un-efficient(creates heat). i wont run over 15 psi cuz thats about the sweet spot (where its most efficient without creating heat) i think the rebuild was $350, and to upgrade was about 100$ +- more. but call around. lots of turbo shops out there.

dcrusupra 11-17-2005 05:44 AM

Whats the biggest trim the CT26 can take?

hate quoting myself, but i posted bad info...

i just found out that trim is just the ratio of the two diameters of the compressor wheel. EXDUCER (big diam.) and INDUCER (small diam) ...trim is how much bite the blades have not the size of the wheel.. to help clearify..

stock ct26 is a 49 trim with 1.75(in) and 2.5 (ex) compressor wheel.
My upgrade is a 50 trim, with 2.25(in) and 3" (ex) compressor wheel. the ratio of the (ex) and (in) is almost the same but the wheel is overalll 1/2 inch bigger than stock diameter..... these measuremeants are not exact but rounded up or down..
ok... sum it up again, a 60. trim on a 3" wheel will grab much more air than say a 45. trim on a same 3" wheel due to the shape of the blades, not the size of the wheel.. but at the same time the 45. trim will spool much faster than the 60. trim its all very complex and mathmatical.. im still learning.. ;)

but remember the size and shape of the exhaust side wheel will also make a difference in spool time and flow and power..

hope this help..

great info, i have always wondered about the trim stuff. make lots of sense now

if you get a trim upgrade, do you start running leaner?do you have to get bigger injectors and the lexus afm?
