can't start my 87 turbo!!

Okay, this is offically driving my crazy. My car won't start. It cranks but as if the spark or somthing is being disallowed electronically, preventing the engine from firing up.

It all started when my brake light switch went bust and killed the battery. i replaced the switch and battery and now the car won't start. I've read all the threads about the security system and tried the driver side and passenger side locks to disarm it. I also tried the turn twice to the right from lock position and still nothing. Any other tricks would help greatly!!

whenever i disconect the battery, i always have to turn the key to the run position before i connect the battery back up. its the only way to keep the alarm from tripping and killing my starter. worth a try...

gave it a try...

thanks... worth a shot but still no go :(

ddmcse 11-13-2005 02:17 PM

is it getting spark or not ?

Jazzsaxsupra 11-14-2005 03:59 AM

the security system in the supra is a major pain... i spent an hour trying to get it to start one day, only to find the system had tripped. I got it working by getting out and locking it by the driver's side door, then unlocking it and giving it another go. Worked for me, maybe it'll work for you...

poodlepower 11-15-2005 02:31 PM

been there, tried that...

tried the door lock on both sides... and i'm getting a spark. also my ignitor works and i checked all the wiring (that i could get at). she's been sitting there for over a month now and i need it out before it snows... this is crazy!

joel w 11-15-2005 04:15 PM

is the starter engaging? if not, tap your starter with a hammer while some one cranks it over. may just be bad starter? but it must be cranking if you got spark? hmmmm perplexed...

poodlepower 11-16-2005 02:27 PM

she cranks and cranks but nothin... i'm certain there's something computer/electrical stopping the feul from being injected.

hmmm... maybe my alternator is dead??

poodlepower 11-19-2005 02:18 AM

well, it's off to the dealer. i'm getting her towed tomorrow to get the japanese toyota techs to figure this one out... guy on the phone said it's most definately electrical; could be feul pump or any number of things apparently. more on this as it develops!

rnoswal 11-19-2005 12:40 PM

Well there is that fuel pump relay thing in the fuse box under the hood, but it doesn't matter since it is probably at the most expensive repair shop in the world. Hope they don't find you need a new driver seat or anything.

Let us know what they found. It is fun guessing on here, but we don't always get to hear if any of us were close or not.

noone would have guessed this one i don't think... cam position sensor is bust. unfortunately it's part of a massive distributor assembly that will have to completely be replaced (this is what i've been told). if anyone had this problem and knows how to repair the sensor without a massive overhaul of the distributor that would be great... because a new assembly is like $850!!

j3pz 11-22-2005 02:21 AM

is just the sensor busted or the cams also? i have a cps i bought over ebay for an engine i pulled but now im just gonna try and sell it.

rays87turbo 11-22-2005 04:04 AM

You really should be able to find a good used on at supraforums.com supramania.com or on ebay or at a salvage for about $50. Any CPS from 87 to 92...they're all the same.

poodlepower 11-22-2005 10:24 PM

i'm having my supra buddy (mr.supra) put in a spare cps he has... i have no idea why i was told by the assitant manager that i need a whole distributor assembly when my car is a turbo. then again this was over the phone and i wasn't looking at who i was talking to... so hopefully she'll be running free again some time tomorrow evening. so far this is promising to end happily!so in the end, diagnostics showed that a busted cps will tell the computer to tell the ignition system not to start. nothin to do with the alarm system. but yet another reminder how far ahead the electronic system in m3 model really was for its time.

as a side note, my dad was the one that wanted this car sold because we've run out of garage space and i don't have a spot at my condo... but with all the attention she gets on the road and by neighbors and the fact he's a toyota nut he's having second thoughts!

am i going crazy? dont these supras use cam and crank sensors instead of distrubutors?
please slap me silly......

j3pz 12-07-2005 06:19 PM

the turboed models have cps and the N/As have a distributer
