I got a set of four of the non tems shocks at Advance auto. They were KYB's and work very well. They were about the price you quoted. My car came with the TEMs system as well. I choked when I saw the price for replacements. I couldn't imagine what Toyota want for those things.

Also a set of lowering springs and it rides pretty good. More rough than stock of course, but I like the stiffer suspension.

Are TEMS worth the price?

Right now, my 87 N/A doesn't handle the curves as well as I think it should. There is a lot of lean (roll?) when going around curves. I don't have a need for speed, but I do like a car that handles well, and I think this one needs improvement. It has 128k miles, so there may be some original parts that need to be replaced. Whats the best way to improve the handling? I'm not sure what benefit a "lowering" kit has.

a lowering kit will help because first of all it lowers the center of gravity in your car and two they usually have stiffer springs with helps reduce body roll or lean as you call it.

Also get new shocks, and maybe stiffer sway bars. Ive seen those for sale. There is a problem with my car where it has a loose upper ball join in the rear and it handles left turns like sh1t

Hrm..

I went for cheap KYB GR-2 shocks (obviously non-tems) and Eibach Pro Kit springs. Car looks great, and handles great :) I have never tried TEMS, so I don't know if it's worth it.

i put Koni on my supra..$400, but this is the best stuff without tems.,

Laugh now.

I drove around for a year and a half before I found out I only had TEMS in the front of my car because the rear shocks just weren't TEMS, plugs hanging loose beside replacment shocks. Half a year later I drop the car by abot 1.5" all round and find Bilstein shocks hiding up front.
Yea, you really don't notice that much of a difference between TEMS and non.
