7mgte ticking noise

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping you guys can help me out on this one. I have a 89 supra turbo. Although the engine has 189000 miles on it, it's been running great and strong. Recently, the engine developed some kind of ticking sound. It really sounds like it's cominf from the turboitself but I'm not exactly sure. Maybe it's a faulty turbo? The car makes no noise when idling. Everything sounds perfectly normal. The car is pretty much stock besides the k&n air filter and blitz nur spec exhaust. While driving normally(between 1000-2000rpm) there is a ticking noise. As the Rpms increase, the ticking noise gets louder and gets faster. When idling there is no ticking at all. I have no idea, I'm stumped lol can u guys please help? Thanks

Welcome to the forums! And do you have any codes stored on the car? And it seems that the ticking noise may be engine related, for you said that with higher RPMs the noice becomes more noticeable and louder and faster, which may be a sign of rod knock. Like you said it has almost 190k so that's a good amount of miles and wear and tear. That's how mine started out w/ slight ticks and eventually becoming really loud like a hammer hitting against the block. Maybe if you post a video it'll give us all a better insight.

Thank you S-mk3-B. It's definitely not rid knock though. I've heard rod knock before and it's not that obnoxiously loud. It's like a clock ticking noise but it's not present when idling. The only time you would notice it is if your driving past cars and giving some gas. It sounds like it's coming from the turbo tho. Thank you though. I'll try to post a video as soon as possible

Could be a lot of things. Things to check. Timing at 10 deg BTDC with E1 & T1 shorted.
Valve lash clearance on the intake and exhaust cams. Look in the cylinders by eye or bore scope. If there is a lot of carbon, try a octane booster to see if the knock goes away. If it does use a good cleaner in the gas like Lubro Moly "Jectron" found at NAPA auto. Could be piston skirt slap from too much clearance between the piston and bore.

Alright Bru thank u very much. I'll try and see if any of that works

Hi , The symptoms you have described point to an over-advanced ignition = " pinking " , this only happens when the engine is under load / acceleration with an open throttle .
Questions? , Does the noise go away when the throttle is closed off ? , Has the ignition been reset recently ? .
If this IS the case , retard the ignition slightly .
This link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_knocking to Wikipedia refers to this condition .
Also check your knock sensor .
Edit addition : Also check this http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar...px?S=Main&P=44 Number 12 - Knock sensor
