First timer with supra need advice
 

I recently bought a 1990 supra with the 7mgte motor and it has 117,000 miles. im having a couple problems with it that i need some help with first problem is it BURNS alot of oil. seccond problem it does not hold the oil pressure it should when its warm going 60 it runs 20 psi at idle is very close to zero. Those are the only problems the car has. the head gasket has been changed and the metal gasket was put in. next quiestion is what are my steps to making this car fast and to turning the boost up. its all stock and other then the cold ait intake.. i really apreciate it thanks money is not really an object i work 70 hrs. a week and just need this car done the right way without wrecking anything like i said im a newb when it comes to tuners. im a full time diesel mech im not used to baby turbos and baby motors.....:gotnos:

Hi ! , with regards to burning oil , were the valve rubbers changed when the head gasket changed ? , they usually carbonise and the oil is drawn down the stem and disappears that way . I had a Golf type Volkswagen with this problem , went through about a gallon a week. Changed the stem rubbers-problem cured.

Ok thanks for the info forget about the making it fast part I found the steps in the mk111 faqs thread. I will change valve seals this week. Do you think that will help my oil pressure problem.??

Hi ! , if you are changing the stem seals on the head it is always a good idea to do ONE cylinder at a time if still fitted , that way there is little chance of dropping a valve into the cylinder ( make sure the piston is at top dead centre ) . While checking the seals it is a good idea to check the oil gallery allen key plugs . These are known to leak and fill the spark plug holes with oil . If they were leaking then curing this leak will improve your oil pressure somewhat .

Also ! do not forget to cover the oil drain holes with thick paper or rags , you do not want to lose anything down those into the sump ! .

You shouldn't be losing much oil at all through old valve stem seals... and typically this is only really seen when starting the engine cold and any smoke disappears after about five minutes. It's possible if they're missing or so far gone as to pretty much be missing but you would have seen this coming a long time ago. It's easy to avoid dropping the valves into the cylinder when replacing seals with the head still in place. Remove both cams, pull the spark plugs, rotate the crank so the current cylinder is at the bottom, feed in 1/4" rope until you can't fit anymore, rotate crank to bring the knot of rope up against the valves. When done with that cylinder's valves, rotate the crank to free up the rope and pull it out. Another way is to use an air compressor to fill the cylinder with enough air to hold the valves up.

Where the engine block and head properly machined before the metal head gasket was installed? Was the rear timing belt cover machined while attached to the block?

Have you done a leak down test or even a compression test? Checked the turbo for oil? Checked the intake? Have you replaced the valve cover seals (DON'T over torque them! They should only be hand tight!)?

See the FAQ about cold air intakes... You may have actually made things worse and any increase you think you see may only be perceptual.
