high rpm and loss of power.
 

I just bought a 88 supra turbo think it was swaped from a/t to 5speed and was happy with how it handled and pushed. A week passed since I bought it and its starting to lose power and put out a high rpm, mostly on 3rd gear. I was messing whith the suspension switch by the shift knob and it had no difference.

The prev owner said he just had the clutch changed so I'm hoping it has nothing to do with the clutch.

Also wondering about the ect : power/eco lights on the rpm guage. They are always off an have no idea how they work. There's a touch sens button by the steering wheel but I think its for the fog lights I don't have.

The power and eco lights are used to indicate what mode the automatic transmission is in, supporting your theory that the car has been switched to a manual.

I have no clue what youre saying when you say it has a high rpm, can you explain further?

Well I feel that my supra isn't pushing enough being at a high rpm. I don't thnk its a woreed out clutch. When I shift the rpm speeds up a lot after around 2500. When I ease up on the gas it goes back down and kinda stays on a steady rpm and speed rise. And about the codes the check engine light is of but I was thinking maybe they disconected it or something

There can still be codes stored even though the light is off. What you're describing sounds like the clutch is slipping, and is in need of replacement

But wouldn't it just go nowher? I still drive it to school. Them previous owner said he just took it to the toyota dealership to have it the clutch replaced. Not even 20000 miles on it. Didn't resurface the flywheel maybe.

You could still be generating enough friction to drive the car with a slipping clutch. In low rpms the car isn't producing much power; as the engine spins faster it produces more power, eventually producing enough to overcome the little friction between the clutch and flywheel.

There are a number of factors that can cause the clutch to wear out prematurely, you wont really know for sure what caused it until you have the clutch out. I would suspect either an inferior clutch, or maybe some sort of lubricant made its way onto the friction surface.

Any oil leaks towards the rear of the engine/front of the tranny?

Gearing is a fixed reference point. If you're running the factory 3.91:1 differential and the R154 transmission then you should see in 3000RPM at 41.8MPH, 3500RPM at 48.7MPH, 4000RPM at 55.7RPM, 4500RPM at 62.7MPH all in 3rd gear regardless of the load... So whether the car is floored or not those are absolutes. The only thing which will cause those numbers to vary regardless of how hard you're pushing the car is a slipping clutch.

Really any RPM at a given speed should be consistent despite load, those are just a few quick reference points I know.

thanks for the feedback. Hoping on droping tranny soon. Any recomandations on puting on stock or stage clutches? I know you need a diffrent clutch for turbo.
LAst qua estion could the premature wher be because of wrong tranny? Do I need a different one for a 7mgte?

U need a clutch that matches ur transmission since it was a swap it might be A w58 and not a r154. W58's are cheaper and earlier to find then a r154.

So a w58 or a r154 can be mixed and matched with a na and turbo supra engines?
Wher can I look on the transmission to find out witch one it is?
